PSA: Blu-ray Disc does not have an 'e' in it anywhere.

The only reason it's called Blu-ray is because you can't trademark Blue because it is a color and you can't trademark something like that.

That's fantastic. It's still Blu-ray for all the people spelling it incorrectly.

and here comes the 'blew-ray' from the HD DVD fanboys. :(

Screw spelling it out. It's BD. I think it'll be best if they begin to simply refer to them as BD's (although 2 letters isn't as appealing as 3, as in DVD).
Nobody referred to DVD and 'Digital Video Disc'. Or did they in the very beginning? I dunno, I don't really remember the start of DVD. Wasn't important to me at the time, had no vested interest as I was kind of on the too young side to care. (or Digital Versatile Disc in the recent years when they brought the format to more wide-range usage)

BD sounds stupid, blu-ray sounds "cool". Actually as much as I loved HD DVD, it's name was a mouthful. I usually just called it HD, which could be confusing if you didn't know what I was talking about. Anyway DVDs were always called DVD.

In commercials, we have "DVDs" and "Blu-ray Discs" - they aren't called BDs in the commercials :(

you are right. BD does sound bland and boring compared to Blu-ray. It has that futuristic, fancy-tech ring to it.

I guess I'll probably always say Blu-ray in person, but will always type BD. I like acronyms. :)

BD is too close to VD. "Blu-ray" is the same number of syllables anyways.

"Do you have BD?"
"I did, but the doctor gave me some antibiotics and it cleared right up."

Why is the acronym for Blu-ray BD? Shouldn't it be BR, though I already use that acronym for something else so I guess BD works, just kind of strange is all.

BD stands for Blu-ray Disc. The same way CD stands for compact disc. The same way DVD stands for.... oh wait, it stands for nothing.

But I think Blu-ray is supposed to be a compound word or something.

I personally like BRD (Blu-ray Disc...of course). Saying BRDs in person would make more sense to me I suppose. The three letters flow rather nicely. Plus, as a person who worked in consumer electronics, I believe many people out there would start calling BD, Blue Disc and skip the ray. Not that it really matters, but that just kind of bugs me. HAHA :D

I just call it Blu-ray, nothing more, nothing less. No misunderstandings, no problems. It's not like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, a word that need to be shortened in casual conversation.

I agree on the first part, but how, exactly, do you shorten supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?

I think it should be called Blu Disc because it's much easier to say and write out than Blu-Ray.

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious was used since the days of the cavemen, and has since been shortened to simply "super" with a small lisp added in.
In other news the word "chimchiminychimchimenychimchimcheroo" was finally shortened to "chimney" much to the relief of many Englishmen.

They should change the same to something that means something. Perhaps, high definition DVD or something.

Exactly. So consumers confuse the product with either dvd players connected to a high definition tv, or upconverting dvd players connected to a high definition tv.

Don't have the same problem in the Blu-ray review section.

Not to mention with the BDA being a separate group from the DVD forum, cannot use the term "DVD" in the name.

Haven't you seen store ads for upconverting players specifically calling them HD DVD players? Too bad Target finally corrected it, for the longest time the perfect example was a Sony upconverting player on their site filed under HD DVD next to the Toshiba HD-A2. (I can't tell you how many times I got Blu-ray supporters freaked out for a moment when they first saw the title "Sony HD DVD player" :D)

The "perfect" name turned out to be not so perfect after-all.
