PSA: Avoid Windows Media Player 11

Windows media player 11 will:

• Remove the ability to transfer licenses to another PC or even back them up.

• For Media Center users, it will limit playability of recordings of copy protected TV shows (pretty much everything except commercials & public access) to 3 days.

• Connect to Microsoft to get permission to play songs ripped from your own CDs

yet another reason to use mp3... wmp11 is still by far the best music manager/jukebox out there and im not going anywhere... love the ui.

and theres already hacks out there to remove the "protected show" thing on media center and im sure there will be something similar for vista.

1. Why can't you just redownload the license from the software. If you use Napster/Yahoo/Apple, can't you just log back in and grab the license? I've had to do that before on Win XP

3. If I rip songs in MP3 format, it's a non DRM format and Microsoft wouldn't need to connect.

I've used WMP 11 in Vista and haven't had any problems with it.

The # of times that is allowed will be limited, and some vendors won't allow it at all.

FYI, almost every show on TV is copy protected. And I'm not talking about premium channels.

WMP11 is fine for me. The organization is pretty good and it is the only program that works with the hotkeys on my W3J laptop. As for ripping music, EAC with a Lame Encoder in VBR 0 FTW.

"The # of times that is allowed will be limited, and some vendors won't allow it at all. " Who doesn't allow this? I've used Yahoo and Napster and they both allow as many license updates as long as you subscribe to the service.

The alternative for TV is Tivo or a service from your cable subscriber. I know it sucks for some people, but pirating is rampid and they are just trying to protect themselves.

No, because Apple refuses to license their propriety fairplay DRM wrapper to anyone. Cant lose any iTunes sales.

I have been using WMP11 for months and have never had an issue with anything. Until I do I will continue to use it as I love the interface and all of the new features.
