At least for me. By jove, I think they've fixed it! Behold the glorious ~15KB of my avatar! (it can go bigger, up to 500KB, but I'm economical with the pixels)

No, mine happens to be 15KB. I think the actual limit now is 500KB, which is plenty.

Great, earlier I had to figure out a 96x96 8KB jpg to make it fit, now a 500kb limit comes out. A animated/gif avatar would have been great.

Figures though, by the time they find the problem, I've settled on a new 6.46KB avatar. I'm not changing.
I've a feeling if I uploaded a larger image and let the forum software scale it down, it would look worse.

That'll work! I like the colors. I'll see what everyone else comes up with, then maybe tweak it to get what I consider perfect. Doing themes is tiresome, even using builtin tools for a forum's cp. There's a lot of things that can break, or simply look crappy in the dustier corners. You'll get it tweaked out nicely, then wander to one of the outposts on the site, and say "Oh...". Then you're back to getting things right, after $stupid_feature ruined your theme :^D

All this is to say I'm not good at the web, and prefer making changes to what others have made rather than starting anew.
