Proof

Viruses, bacteria, irritating substances (shampoo, dirt, smoke, pool chlorine), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or allergens (substances that cause allergies) can all cause conjunctivitis. Pink eye caused by bacteria, viruses or STDs can spread easily from person to person but is not a serious health risk if diagnosed promptly; allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious.

I always thought it was and a lot of people have been telling me it is because I have something wrong with my eye and the best guess is pink eye. I was just researching it to see if I really had it or not because I dunno if I'll get in to see my doctor before I leave for San Diego and I came across that sentence and thought I'd share, since most people think it's contagious.

con·ta·gious Audio pronunciation of "contagious" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (kn-tjs)
adj.

1. Of or relating to contagion.
2. Transmissible by direct or indirect contact; communicable: a contagious disease.
3. Capable of transmitting disease; carrying a disease: stayed at home until he was no longer contagious.
4. Spreading or tending to spread from one to another; infectious: a contagious smile.

Do you know what a semi-colon is used for?

Conjunctivitus == "Pink-eye"

Allergic Conjunctivitus != "Pink-eye"

Yep, I had a really red eye recently from a facial cleanser I use. I think I was getting some in my eye somehow while rinsing my face after washing and one of my eyes was really irritated for a couple days after. This happened twice in the last few months. A couple days and it was gone. Of course, I had to endure 2 or so days of people at work asking me if I had pink eye...I guess because I have a son they automatically assume I have pink eye and that it's highly contagious.

Yeah I think it got it from chlorine. I went swimming two days in a row and it was the first time I'd swam in chlorine in a good 6 months.

There was never any doubt to whether or not allergic conjunctivitis is contagious. Are allergies contagious? I've never in my life encountered anybody who has ever thought that allergic conjunctivitus is contagious.

The OP is most likely thinking of bacterial conjunctivitis, which is contagious.

Most people, when they think of pink eye, are thinking of the bacterial conjunctivitus.

How bout I do a PSA: Water is wet?

Weird, I am having the same problem right now. I had it a few weeks ago, and now I have it again this week. I think its from my weekends of too much drink and too many cigars.

Most people don't realize there are two separate types of pink eye, which is what I was getting at. Mine was caused by allergies and therefore is not contagious, and I wanted to share that it was not for tonight's useless trivia.

There was no need for you to try to be a douche about it, especially because you tried to prove a point that I was not even discussing. This thread has to do with Allergic Conjunctivitis, not Bacterial Conjuntivitis.

Guess what, most people just say "allergies" if their eyes are irritated and it's not a bacterial infection.

The term "pink eye" is almost exclusively used to describe bactertial conjunctivitus by the average person.

And if you really want me to be a douche about it, you don't even have "allergic" conjunctivitis, you have irritant conjunctivitis.

I say allergies and people still say pink eye. Are they not one in the same if there is a pink eye condition caused by pink eye? Either way, you tried to prove me wrong on a point that was moot because I wasn't discussing the bacterial type.

I think people freak out about it too much. Sure its contagious, but it must not be that contagious, usually peoples other eye is fine.

Exactly. However I think most people get the bacterial type when they're younger which is contagious and when you're young you don't know the difference between allergies and bacteria.

Seriously, this is a pretty dumb discussion. I just don't get why he had to try to prove me wrong when the sentence he referred to wasn't talking about allergic conjunctivitis.

I guess allergic conjunctivitis is called pink eye, too? I just call it eye allergies for myself. Opcon-A works well.

He probably made the same mistake I did - the thread title: PSA: Allergic Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is NOT contagious indicates that pink eye == allergic conjunctivitis, which is not at all true.

There are a few different types of conjunctivitis. Bacterial conjunctivitis, Viral conjunctivitis, Chlamydial conjuctivitis, Allerigic conjunctivitis, and Giant papillary conjunctivitis. There are a few more diseases that may present as conjunctivitis IIRC.
