if you're going to bother making them, please use more than 2 blocks per 50 meg file

thanks

if you use more than 2 blocks per 50 meg file. 10 would be nice. 20 would be better. ideally, you'd make them the same size as your part size

And should you do the above, please don't include the *.sfv and *.nfo files in the par set.

I usually set it by 15% of the entire file size.

Why do people use these obscure file formats? What's wrong with zip or even rar?

Extracting multipart zip files are a pain. Files with *.001, *.002 files can be recombined with either WinRAR or HJSplit. If the extension is *.ts, there HD transport stream files and can be recombined with HDTV2MPEG. *.nfo files are just text files containing details of on with the post is. *.sfv files are checksum files used to ensure the files are not corrupt. But *.sfv have really become unnecessary with Par/Par2 files. Since they contain the necessary CRC info to check and then repair files.

.zip doesn't offer recovery features like .rar (with a corresponding .par set). Which means no more downloading 50meg files, only to find them corrupted and useless. Par2 rocks! 😀

PAR files aren't obscure. ZIP & RAR are basically compression formats, PAR is a parity file for reconstructing damaged files.

And whoever posted that crappy quality movie (that I happened to be looking for) without any nfo on a.b.m.d should be banned.

look it up. a few par files allow u to restore a corrupt file out of the whole batch up to the amount of pars u have. its a way of safe guarding data.
