PSA: A bit OT, but since we post a lot of open box deals at Newegg, watch the true cost...sometimes a deal isn't a deal

I know the open box deals at Newegg can sometimes be a great way to save some serious money.

Other times, though, it can end up costing instead of saving......esp. if you assume the open box deals are that....deals.

Case in point......

Two AMD Sempron 3000+ processors, both model SDA3000BXBOX.

Sempron 64 3000+ open box for $34.55

Sempron 64 3000+ retail for $39.50

Looks good so far, right? Almost $5 savings for the open box unit which includes a heatsink/fan, just like the retail version.

Great! Savings!!!

Well, that's until you realize the open box unit has a shipping cost of $5.64 while the retail unit has FREE SHIPPING.

So, now buying open box will actually cost you .69 MORE than the retail version.

So pay attention to the open box deals.......sometimes a deal isn't what it may seem to be.

And I know everyone already knows this, but I've gotten some PM's about why this deal or that one wasn't posted, or did I see this or that great open box deal at the 'Egg. Usually it's because of just this issue. so, not everyone knows or watches....some just assume open box automatically means great deal!

And if this isn't appropriate for here......I'll gladly delete the entire post, no problem.

Also, some open box items don't come with all the accessories. Yeah most of us have a lot of the crap lying around, but sometimes even the necessary accessories are missing. Open box deals are YMMV big time.

Anyone who has difficulty determining that a new item for $39.50 shipped is a better bargain than an open box item for $40.19 shipped has bigger problems than can be addressed with a PSA.

Not to mention going for an open box for a whopping $5 savings is nuts anyway. I'll pay the extra $5 to be sure it works when it arrives.

Whoa there, slow down.

Refurb or Brand New? Because with this PSA, it is beneficial to go with the brand new item.

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle!

imma computa

G I Joeeee!

Considering your first link for the refurbished one goes to the new one, it's probably a good chance that someone bought the refurbs anyhow. Probably one of those same kinds of people who will bid an item on ebay above what it goes for new.

And isn't Newegg guilty of taking returns and reshipping as "refurbished"?

They used to classify them as refurb. Now they classify as "open box".

worst deal ever. where can one buy a clue at a decent price?

just like the guys that sell an LCD TV on ebay for $500 "Buy it now" and charge $250 for shipping. You could buy the same thing in the store for $750.
