FFS, there are cars with 7 speed AUTOMATIC transmissions out there! Many (notice I didn't say all) auto makers no longer even offer 4spd auto; 5spd auto is the norm. Hell, I've had a 5spd auto since 1998. On top of that, 6spd manuals are slowly replacing 5spd manuals. Also, IIRC, on some cars you could either get a 4spd auto or 5spd auto. In that case, 5 speed certainly wouldn't imply a manual transmission.

For example, I've been looking at 2005-2006 Mustangs on ebay (just for the pictures really, I don't plan on buying)... a lot of them are advertised as "5 Speed." Well yeah it doesn't come in anything but 5 speed... either auto or manual is the question.

That is all. Have a nice day. Text

It is common practice to refer to MT's as "X-speed." If I'm discussing a >4-speed auto, I say "X-speed auto." Moving on....

Heaven forbid a dictionary entry becomes outdated.

When did people start referring to automatic transmissions as standard transmission? Standard transmission != standard equipment.

And what's the deal with speeds anyway? My car can go all sorts of different speeds, but it has 5 gears (+ reverse). ;)

What, I can't take 20 minutes to go make something to eat?

I don't have any real replies to offer to CVSiN. I'm obviously not going to change his mind, because change is a terrible thing, right?
It doesn't have to just be sports cars. People do it with all types of cars. Saying you have a 5-speed doesn't nesecarily imply that you have a manual transmission. I've even seen the reverse plenty of times where people will say they have a 5-speed, and it actually is an automatic. With 5 speed automatic and 5 speed manual transmissions being so common, take an extra second to say or type which one it is.

"My car has a 5 speed"
"Oh, auto or manual?"
"Auto"
"Why didn't you say that in the first place?"
"Because you're a freaking moron who is supposed to know the difference"

I have never heard anyone refer to an automatic transmission as a "X-speed," and "standard" means manual transmission. In fact, around here, nobody calls them manuals, they're either standards or stick-shifts.

Sorry...been a gearhead for years and I've *never*, not even once, heard an auto referred to as a "x speed".

And it's an automatic.

That's ebay...it can be described as anything they want. I'd like to see a dealer advertise an auto as a "5 speed"....

The problen you're running into is that the people selling the cars are generally ignorant to the fact that they're being ambiguous or they just don't know any better. Many people selling cars on ebay, classifieds, etc. just assume that everyone knows their car is an automatic -- it never even crosses their mind that they should give details on the transmission because it may have come with more than one kind.

If they don't say in unclear terms that it's a manual transmission vehicle then I always assume it's an automatic.
