A cheap HTPC build blows them both to bits for media. Small SSD for OS, big cheap HDD for storage, just a better option all the way if you don't care about 8th gen gaming.

It does, but it also is probably going to cost more and still be a superfluous purchase, as everyone seems to agree that he has basically all the hardware he needs to enjoy his content already.

well buying an xboxone or ps4 if you aren't going to game is retarded as well.

Does the ps3 not have the apps you want to use to watch shows or movies? I had mine hooked up for the longest time before I got an xbox one.

If I wasn't gaming I would not buy a console just for that option. Seems you already have something that does this.

I don't think so. It's been a while since I've used it. But, I don't think it had ESPN3 or all the other cable show apps.

Only in your little mind. People were buying PS3 just for bluray. I doubt that non-gaming consumption devices from 2005 or 2006 can still keep up with the PS3 or 360 when it comes to home entertainment today. Also, at least for Xbox One, Microsoft touts it as being the center of your home entertainment. Should I buy it, its primary job will be as an non-gaming device that may play the occasional games, if ever. And this is exactly what my 360 has become, all these years later. Get it?

not sure if srs.

people bought the ps3 for bluray because it was the same exact price as standalones and was one of the better ones as well since it had internet connection and could update firmware via the internet.

and you said you are a "non gamer", as in, you don't game. now you are saying you will use it for occasional gaming. those are 2 different things. of course if you are going to use it to game it's worth getting.

I still don't understand the the problem with the PS3.

It does Hulu, Amazon instant video, Netflix, HBOGo, DLNA streaming, rock solid Blu Ray playback, and can use PC based media server software to pull and transcode additional video formats. It supports all the major sports services and you can also do PlayON to get additional stuff. I also love the Blu Ray based remote because of the non-directional transmission. It doesn't even need the PS3 to be in the same room to work.

The Xbox One oversold on the media integration and is still a work in progress. You have something that works well. Unless you need an excuse to spend money I just don't see the point.

but I feel a console will have a much better experience and support over it's lifetime than something you can buy for $100 or less.

And you would be wrong in that assumption.

Right now today you can have a better interface for local media on a FireTV (with Kodi installed) than either console will ever have period. Also a box like a FireTV or Roku 3 should be supported with app updates for a very long time. In fact, those boxes should get more frequent app updates because their primary use is media consumption. For the money you save you can get a FireTV 2 in two years and have a better experience in a five year period for less.

Heck, I think this generation of consoles is a STEP BACK for media consumption from the last generation in many ways.

The PS3 is a bit slow compared to other devices though. It's real downfall IMO.
