I don't even have a PS4 but I'm excited as can be about this just hoping it makes it to PC at some point. N, released in 2004, was the original game which I spent dozens (hundreds?) of hours delving into (I never did beat all of the original... 500? 1000? levels. But I was damn close!) late at night and between classes and in class almost anytime I was on a computer with a few spare minutes. Despite being only a few MB big and not having any music and only three buttons for controls I'd be lying if I said it wasn't one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had.

It isn't for everyone. It's hard. It's frustrating. It's unforgiving. You will die. A lot. You will fail levels at the last second in infuriating fashion. But at the same time your palms will sweat and you'll sway in your seat in sync with the ninja, urging him to reach that next ledge or evade the missile quickly closing the gap between you and it. And when you finally perfect that jump and get past something that's broken your little stick figure into a hundred pieces a hundred times over it's a genuine rush.

N exemplifies some of the very best that gaming has to offer - controls that feel perfect, expert love-fueled craftmanship and, to me, prioritizes nothing at the expense of gameplay. I think it has that Tony Hawk's Pro Skater quality - no matter what sort of games you normally like playing it is just the kind of pure fun that crosses genre boundaries and you just don't want to put it down until you've landed that ridiculous combo or beaten that son-of-a-gun level. As long as you can handle it kicking your ass too.

I know this sounds like a sales pitch but there aren't many games that have left such an impression on me or that I harbor such affection for. To this day the original is available for free and I would absolutely recommend anyone at least trying it.

Fingers crossed for a ported edition!

never played the original, but that trailer does look pretty fun. i'm concerned about the controls but in the trailer they say it has awesome controls and you mention it too, so i'm assuming they take that serious which is a good thing. game that fast definitely needs tight controls.

doubt i'd spend $20 on it but if it was like $10 i'd probably snag it.

I can see myself getting really frustrated with that after just a couple of minutes. :D It looks cool though.

Controls are extraordinarily tight (at least in N+, haven't played N++ yet). I mean, it's pretty minimalist in terms of buttons, moves, and graphics, so there's never any sluggishness, slowdown, unpredictable physics, or fighting with camera angles.

N+ was pretty fun. But I had it on DS and it worked very well as a portable game with the short levels, no story to follow, pick up and go gameplay, etc. I dunno if I'd play N+ (or by extension, N++) on a home console.

Looks super cool, but I have a feeling I would get more enjoyment just watching someone else play it. I would probably die every five seconds and get very frustrated. :D

The textures are really crappy in this game and I can see all sorts of jaggies. I bet it doesn't even run at 1080p /60

I played N+ a good deal years back so I'm super excited for N++. I'm about halfway through the Solo content atm. I love how many levels there are and all the Legacy levels brought back as well.

I will admit I miss the N+ music though. The N+ title theme and in-game music was a huge part of my enjoyment of the game.

Yeah the controls are one of the real high points of the game imo. I get easily annoyed playing some other platformers (or really any game) when controls feels "slippery" or "loose" or it seems like my character isn't doing what it feels like it should be and I think that's due in part to N setting the bar so high. I always thought it struck a good balance between being extremely responsive/granular without being overactive, like you can tap a button to just barely move in a given direction and it will register as your character just "nudging" in that direction rather than taking a full step. Jumping is the same way in that you have pretty fine control over just how high you jump based on how long you hold the button and the direction you're indicating at the time of (and during) the jump as well. All of which becomes pretty important further into the game as levels become more complex and difficult.

Started playing the original a bit once again for funsies - it's amazing how familiar some of the levels seem/look even now so many years later. No real roadblocks until level 18-4 kicked my ass probably the better part of 100 times :D
