PS4 hardware teardown is here

Fan is just there for looks with that netbook CPU.

First PS without the classic PS multi AV port. I just now realized that.

What if I want to play in 240p 15Khz on my CRT!?

that fan looks small and loud

hope its not

when i was in gamestop, the demo unit was loud as shit. i wasn't sure if it was an external fan at first because it was so loud, but i looked around the ps4 and there was no fan. however, it was in a plastic encasing thing, not fully, but it wasn't sitting out like we'll have them at home. but it definitely was LOUD.

The PS4's internal design, even the mobo form factor, are very similar to the PS3 Slim. I doubt the TDP, thus the noise, are going to but much worse than the Slim. Which is a very quiet console.

the one i heard was louder than my fat ps3. but like i said, it wasn't in the most optimal location.

either way i'm not concerned. NOTHING is louder than the amp that is powering my subs lol. and that doesn't bug me since it's behind me and back in a closet (although i keep the doors partially open for cooling reasons).

yeah that is what i'm running. i remember reading about the mod but i didn't want to mess with the warranty just in case. it doesn't bug me cause it's hardly audible when there is no sound at all coming from my system, which is very rare.

the X1s hardware is similar and its using a 120 or 140 MM fan to cool it.

That's the weird part, I can't tell if Sony is just god-like in hardware design or if Microsoft is just too cautious from the RRoD debacle. The X1 has that big ass fan and still has the power brick outside, unlike the PS4.

That said, if I were getting a PS4, I wouldn't be worried about noise or overheating. All of my consoles sit in open air environments, not enclosed in the slightest.

The difference in cooling design could be attributed to the difference in the way the console is expected to be used - the X1 is expected to be on more often than the PS4 due to the television features. A bigger fan could be there to move slower and produce less noise during those scenarios. Keeping the Power Supply outside also minimizes heat inside the case.

Obviously just a guess, but I'd imagine that has a lot to do with it, along with the fear or RRoD round 2.

I'd prefer the fan to be larger, slower, and quieter like the X1s. And it looks like the X1 has better ventilation imo.

The nice thing about Sony is all their consoles are fairly modular. Thus making them easy to fix should something break. Not like a certain fruit themed company that's gone glue happy recently. I'm sure the Xbox One will be the same, though I'm not pleased that they're still using proprietary hard drives.

not sure if you are serious or not.

have you ever attempted to take a ps3 apart? i was looking at the instructions when i got a ylod a while ago.

that is far from being easy to fix if something breaks.

ps2 was similar but not quite as complex. normal psx was a piece of cake to open and get to the mobo. i modded many of those with modchips. xbox and 360 are much easier to take apart and fix than ps2 and ps3 have been.

That german teardown guy measured the noise with a decibel reader after an hour of load, can't remember the exact reading but it was well below the PS3 in ANY incarnation. I'll believe that over one anecdotal report for now, especially as those demo units are in a small space and used all day.

Also you guys aren't considering coaxial vs centrifugal fan types. Even if you could tell anything from fan size alone.

Very cool. Not too fussed about the noise. I never even heard my fat PS3 all that much until it was starting to near the end of its life. Can't imagine this would be any louder than that.

Yes, I had to take one apart when my PS3's Blu-Ray laser died, and it wasn't that hard. The only tricky thing that I remember is that you cannot tighten the ODD's screws too much or it simply won't be able to pull the disc in all the way. I don't think that technically goes as far as a YLOD, but that's pretty far in. I thought the 360 was a little more annoying because of all those easy-to-break tabs that hold the dark gray side vents in. The PS3 is just a ridiculous number of really long screws!

Have you tried fixing a recently made Apple laptop? Everything is glued down and cannot be replaced at all. Also the PS3 Slim, Vita, and PS4 are relatively easy to take apart. The Fat is a bit more work but not exactly rocket science if you've ever built a PC.

As long as either of them are quieter than the 360, we'll be good. Even the 360s was extremely loud when spinning a disc.

Original PS2 fat was annoying because you had to move slowly due to the five million delicate paper ribbon cables connecting everything.

Coaxial vs centrifugal fan. Apples to oranges. Not that size would tell you a whole lot even if they were the same type, as the design can vary quite a bit too.
Eh. Still holds. Larger fan equals less RPM's to move the same amount of air. You want to say that one type of fan pushes more air than another, your right. Just saying that all things equal larger is better for noise.
