PS4 download question

Hi, is there any way to shut off all background downloading on the normal ps4 slim? Also, do games run any smoother / faster if background downloading is off?

There is memory reserved for OS functions like this so it poses no benefit.

How about if I use an external hard drive as "extended" storage on my ps4 slim. Do it affect performance when playing games if they are installed to the external hard drive?

I’m not sure if you can install games to the external HDD on a PS4. Maybe they updated it at some point but I don’t know.
