ps3, xbox 360 or ... upgrade

I use to own all kinds of consoles.. From the first nintendos to the ps2 etc. But with the price tags of the ps3 and 360 I had to hold off. Now both are affordable. I own a wii (which I find crappy). I have mainly pc gamed since the ps1 days. Right now my rig has an 8800gts 320 in it which is showing serious age.

So I can buy a ps3, or a 360 or throw in a 5850. ps3 has some nice exclusives, but I am disappointed that multiplatform games look worse on it. xbox 360 has less exclusives I am interested in, but has the better pc variants and some good exclusives. The pc has some big titles coming (d3, sc3, bio2 etc). So ... sigh. I can only do 1.

I need serious opinions.

Questions that need to be answred -
1. Do you plan to play online? With or without friends?
2. Do any of your friends play console games? What consoles do they use to play online?
3. Do you need wifi?
4. Do you plan to use the console for anything other than gaming? Would you use the media streaming capabilities of either console? The Blu-Ray player in the PS3?
5. What types of games do you play? Would you be willing to play FPSes on a console instead of a PC?
6. Do you like game controllers? Does either controller appeal to you more than the other?
7. Would you buy used games or rent games?

No multiplatform game looks worse on the PS3. I transfered my library from the 360 to the PS3 when I switched and there was no difference at all. Killzone definitely looks better than Gears of War.

That said, it really comes down to which platform you want to play Borderlands on 😛

MP games are childish on consoles compared to PCs. If you're really into that you may as well upgrade your computer. Otherwise get a PS3 since XBOX games eventually make it to Windows.

Have you seen Ghostbusters? the PS3 version looks like shit. The patch didn't really help.

Wow you actually didn't take a swipe at the 360 with the RROD and made a reasonable argument for the ps3. :cookie: for you. its too early for

Ghostbusters, Bayonetta, Orange Box, Operation Flashpoint, and more say hi.

There are some multiplatform games that look better on the PS3 but the general perception is that multiplatform games generally have lesser graphics on the PS3. The exceptions are usually games that were made with the PS3 as the lead platform or games that were released much later after the 360 release.

mugs did a good job of answering the OPs question though. The important points are which games are you interested in and which platform allows you to play with your friends the most.

Besides answering mugs's questions, what are the specs on your PC? The 5850 might be held back by it. The 8800 also might have some more life in it if you just drop the resolution a notch in your games, like 14x8 instead of 16x10.

im running 1440 now. The problem is the 320 ram on the card isn't enough for higher settings. Besides that I have a e6400 running at 3ghz and 6 gigs of ddr2 800 in sync
I keep my fps and online games on my pc mainly and will continue to do so I think.

If you want the PS3 exclusives, get the PS3. It's as simple as that. There is usually no difference in multi-platform titles...and when there is, usually you'll never notice unless you have screenshots to compare side by side. I've never been disappointed by multiplatform titles on the PS3.

Just wanted to add:
8. Do you want to be able to play with your friends in person, without lugging another PC/monitor to your home? Conversely, do you like playing split-screen games?

Diablo3, StarCraft2 and BioShock2- I think Bioshock would be the only one your current vid card would have any trouble with. Blizzard certainly isn't known for their cutting edge visuals.

Right now you can pick up a 4870 for $125 at NewEgg, given what you are talking about for games and the fact that you are running 1440 even that may be a bit of overkill.

I'd say going that route and just holding off a little bit and then picking up a console may be a better bet for you. The 5850 is really a stellar parts at its' price point, but given your needs I don't think its' worth it over the 4870.

Well for future games you'd need a quad to run great but you're running at such a low rez it doesn't seem worth it. I can't imagine what games you're playing that run slow on that low of a rez. I can guarantee you that if you get a 5850 you're bottlenecking it with the rest of your system. The biggest advantage to PC gaming is being able to run at high rez and you're not doing that.

How far in the future are you looking towards games wise? You mention Diablo 3, but who the hell knows when that will come out. The PS3 should have a very good spring next year (GT5, God of War 3, I think Final Fantasy?), and recent stuff like Uncharted 2. The 360 is kinda mellowing out. Forza 3, and I'm fairly sure there will be another Gears and Halo, but I doubt either of those soon. The good news is there's a lot of great multi-platform games (Bioshock 2, the new Bioware RPG, Batman Arkham Asylum, Call of Duty, Borderlands, Left 4 Dead 2, and plenty of others I can't recall).

I'd say go for whatever has the most compelling games to you now and in the near future, as that will maximize your value out of it. Its a certainty that there will be newer video cards, for less money, and it might be a good idea to wait and do a more full system upgrade. I doubt we'll see the PS3 move in price much anytime soon, and who knows on the 360.

Just throwing it out there, but if you don't like your Wii, I'm sure you can find someone who'd be interested in buying it or trading you a 360 or PS3 for it and a bit of money, and then you could have enough left over to maybe do a video card upgrade (and if you sell your current card that'd make it even cheaper). Something to consider maybe.

By future you mean 10-12 years. By the time you'll need a quad system your entire system will be outdated by 7-8 years.

Final Fantasy XIII isn't a PS3 exclusive anymore, but Final Fantasy Versus XIII still is; I'm not sure if we even know what type of game Versus is. The next Halo is Halo: Reach which is due out next year; I don't think we know much about it, but it will be a FPS and will apparently have new multiplayer. Though it doesn't sound like it would be worthwhile for the OP to pay for Xbox Live if he's more interested in PC gaming online, and multiplayer is why millions of people buy Halo.

Of course you don't need one just like you don't need a dual core to run games now-a-days either but to run them with everything turned up to warrant a new expensive video card you'd need a quad.

Fixed for you considering the amount of Halos I've heard about. A Halo every year may dilute the brand. However, if they keep changing the type of game, it may be enough to get people to pay.

Starcraft 2 will come out next year (2010). Blizzard has 2 major games due out next year with that and WoW: Cataclysm. They have already stated that DIablo 3 will not come out next year just two major titles. Diablo 3 will be out in 2011. Next year at Blizzcon they are set to show more Diablo 3 stuff, most likely the 5th class.

With regards to what the OP wants, the games that come out on both still look good. Look at the console exclusives but you have a pc and most XBox games get ported later. The PS3 doubles as a blu-ray player as well.

Edit:
I just can't wait for this. It is coming out at the end of March or Early April 2010.

I knew one of the FF's wasn't exclusive anymore, but I remember them saying there were going to be like 4 FFXIIIs or something. The only thing I knew about the next Halo is that it was being worked on. I am a bit surprised that it will be out next year. Yeah, I doubt Halo is going to be much of a motivator to go for the 360. Has there been any other 360 exclusive games even really mentioned lately? Forza, but if you want car sims you can either go Forza or GT5.

Yeah, I didn't see any way DIII would be out before 2011. I assumed Starcraft was coming fairly soon (I remember rumors about it being out this year, but I was doubtful of those).

I think the multiplatform stuff has reached mostly parity. There are still a few here and there, but the PS3 has more exclusive content to look forward to.

As already recommended, you could go with a video card like the 4870 or GTX260 for less than half the price of the 5850. Then sell the 8800 GTS and start saving up for a console.

Or you could do it the other way around. If there are console games you want to play right now compared to PC games that aren't even out yet, then it might be the better choice to go with the console. I'd recommend the PS3 since that has the exclusives you want. Then save up some money for a video card upgrade.
