I got a question about x264 movies in mkv containers. Ok i know with ps3 that it doesn't support mkv container yet so you gotta use mkv2vob program to demux it. For whatever reason half the time it doesn't seem to play back. I noticed if the audio in the file is in dts that even though mkv2vob converts it to ac3 it still wont work. I usually have mkv2vob settings as Video transcoding: Automatic, Output File Extension: vob, and Transcoding Codec: MPEG-2(fast). Heres the data from the last file i tried to demux

ViDEO.CODEC...: x264
FRAMERATE.....: 23.976
BiTRATE.......: 5020kbps
RESOLUTiON....: 1280x556
AUDiO1........: English DTS-ES 6.1 768kbps
AUDiO2........: English Vorbis 2.0 commentary
SUBTiTLES.....: eng cze por ro
SOURCE........: 1080p HDTV H.264 AC3 5.1

Have you tried anything other than "Transcoding Codec: MPEG-2(fast)." I use the default slow transcoding (h264 IIRC) and I've never had a video that didn't play after mkv2vob did its thing.

First of all, block out the name of your mkv. Might get in trouble

Then try:

Video Transcoding: Automatic
Output File Extension: vob or m2ts <m2ts also works fine>
Transcoding Codec: x264
Preferred Subtitle Language: <Your language if you check Always Encode Subtitles>

I have never had a problem using these settings. If you use m2ts, rename the file to .m2t after its done.

There's no stream inside the container that the PS3 is incapable of playing. Demux the MKV and roll up the video and audio tracks you want to use into an AVI file. Should save you a bunch of time too, since that won't involve any transcoding.

Personally, I just setup TVersity and have all my stuff on there (seperate comp) and stream it over the PS3, since it encodes it real-time.

It also looks like crap on the other end. Real-time software encoding, especially on an HD H.264 stream, is just a really bad idea.

How would you do it then, attach an external HD to the ps3? Either way I still think, it's an issue with the ps3 playing the particular format

PS3 will play h.264/xvid/divx files burned onto a DVD. I use it all the time to play back my fansub archive disks. One great feature the 360 lacks (and it pains me to say that).

Well, I decided to grab to file in question just to test it out. I set mkv2vob to x264 transcoding and after it was done the file played perfectly. There must be something going wrong with the mpeg2 trancoding used by the OP.
