Is the PS3 worth it yet(games wise) even though I'm not into movies/blu ray? Wait till sometime next year?

what kind of games do you like? this season has already introduced a handful of titles that are worth playing and are actually great, and their seems to be potentially great titles lined up through next year.

Not really, no.

If games matter, get a 360. If you already have one, then its still not worth it (yet) for the Sony exclusives ( IMO of course)

Do you already have a 360?

Do you already have a PS2?

Are you interested in the dozens of PS2 JPRGs like Final Fantasy, Xenosaga trilogy, Disgaea series? Other PS2 games like Katamari Damacy, God of War, Ico, ... ?

At the moment, and if you're on a budget, you're probably better off with a 360 and PS2 slim ($130 + $30 for 2 memory cards).

There are several games that are great for the PS3. So yes. Dont listen to the Sony haters. The wheels are starting to fall off the bandwagon.

Don't listen to the Sony fanboi's either. The cost of a PS3 is extremely high if you're not going to take advantage of BluRay movies so IMO the answer is not worth it.

And includes free wifi WiFi adapter and no online gaming fee. That's a $150 bonus. Plus right now they are tossing in 6 Blu-Ray disks and a second controller in on the deal making it even sweeter.

The OP said he's not into movies so free BR discs aren't a factor. In most peoples opinion the 360 currently has a better game lineup so the only reason the OP would want a PS3 would be for PS3 exclusive games. IMO the cost isn't worth it.

In short it is definitely worth it. Sold my Xbox 360 a few months ago to get a PS3 and have yet to look back.

and really, there are only a handful of titles that I could define as "great" that aren't multi-platform on the 360.. so really, games are a moot point. Everyone is so used to throwing out the argument that there is a lack of games on the PS3, that it has continued to even when the system has multiple 9+/10 games, and a handful more a little below that. It all depends on your game preferences. The knowledge of what games will be coming next year should also be taken into consideration. Look at what is coming for 360 (what, really, is on the slate for next year?), and look at what is coming for the PS3 (Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, God of War 3 may make it in time.. etc etc). At the price they are offering now, if I hadn't already owned a PS3, I'd definitely get one. There are quite enough games out there to hold you over until spring.

don't get me wrong, the 360 has quite a few great games, some that I even want, but quite a few that I don't and could never justify buying one at the moment. When they are down to $100, probably. I am going to miss Mass Effect until it comes to the PC.

Game selection is still much, much better on the 360. I don't think the PS3 will catch up in that regard any time soon - not this year at least. Most of the best games on the PS3 are also available on 360; most came out first on the 360 (thus are available used for less) and many were better on the 360. On the other hand there are very few great games on the PS3 that aren't also on the Xbox 360.

Get a PS3 if:
1. You want to watch Blu-Ray movies (you don't)
2. You really hate the Xbox 360 controller (controller feel is a big deal to me, not sure about you)
3. You want to play one of the big Playstation exclusive franchises - Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo.
4. You don't want to pay for online gaming

Get a 360 if you want a much better selection of great games, including a lot more at much better used prices due to the system having been out for an additional year. You could get Rainbox 6: Vegas for the 360 for $35 used at EB Games, or you could get it for the PS3 for $55 used.

ask yourself this question ...

are there games you want on the PS3 or coming out soon for the PS3?

if you answer yes to that question, the answer to your OP question is yes. same thing if you answer no to that question.

this really is a stupid ass question to ask random people on the internet about.

Yes.

Wait till sometime next year?

Sure.

...I love how this has turned into a 360 vs. ps3 thread.

Q: Does the PS3 have good games yet?
A: Yes. Resistance, Motorstorm, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, and Uncharted, along with all the great multiplatformers that came out this last month or so as well.

Q: Wait till sometime next year?
A: Sure, if you want. If you can wait, the games will only get cheaper. The system might too. This year has been jam packed with great games, I'm sure if you have a PC or 360 you don't have a shortage of games to play.

best post in the thread. very true.
i tried to say that but then got shot down, somehow. lol

wait if you want, buy now if you want. that is, if you are at all interested in the games.

i made the comparison to the 360 for the purpose that others did and for the fact that most people who are looking at the PS3 are naturally comparing to the 360 and determining which one they truly want.

Eh, as much as you guys want to argue PS3 vs 360, simple fact of the matter is that the 360 has the best game lineup right now including exclusives and multi-platform games. It's just annoying to see PS3 advocates try and sell the system with all the games that will be out. If you are buying right now, the 360 is the way to go. Will you still enjoy your PS3 if you buy it based on potential? Sure.

The 360 has tons of great games to play right now. The PS3 has a few good games and a couple of great ones, and the promise of other great ones. These console wars are getting old, but will never stop, unfortunately.

Blah. Not everyone needs/wants wifi, and not everybody plays online. Plus, you can always buy a used 360 wifi adapter for $60, and 1 year of Live can be had for $40 if you look hard enough. That knocks $50 off of your "bonus", and completely negates the fact that you get 2 free games with the 360 right now.

Like I said in my post above, I hate the console wars, but unfortunately I have to contribute to them because people don't give all the facts.

great games are in the eye of an individual though, or at least.. games worthy of system purchase. As much as I hate to continue to keep this thread 360 vs PS3... the 360 just doesn't have the exclusives that sell the system to be, beyond that of Mass Effect. No other game really stands out as a must buy this system type of game. I say that, because a good number of the exclusives are also on PC. And hell, I don't really even own them on the PC. But that's me. Others may see all these games on the 360 as worthwhile. I just don't. Meanwhile, the PS3 exclusives are truly that, exclusive, not even on the PC. My preferred system is the PC, but numerous playstation titles of past have stuck to the console and never found their way to the PC, and thus why I continue to own the brand.

That's where you and I differ. I don't consider the PC into the equation at all. PC's are entirely different beasts, and IMO, not competition to consoles, period. I'd imagine many will agree with me. Hell, why do you think most forums separate PC and console gaming? They just aren't one and of the same. PC gamers will spend oodles of money over the next few years to be able to play the latest and greatest, everyone else will look into console gaming and may make their judgements based on exclusive games.

So when I say exclusives, consider it "console" exclusives. You're sure to disagree with me, but whatever.

no no no you got me all wrong. I agree and consider them completely different. However, its about realism and practicality. If I prefer PC gaming, why would I even consider owning a game thats available on the PC, on a console? It's just a matter of if its practical or not. I need not own a 360 and the games on it, because the games I do like on it, are available on the PC, and I'd rather them on the PC.
just a matter of personal preference. However, I completely agree that they are completely different. One requires quite a bit of work and money, the other, you buy a box, hook up cables and are good to go. Games require no work either. I see why many are drawn, and I will admit I am drawn to the console experience too. I am drawn to both PC and console gaming, but only console gaming that I cannot access on the PC. I hope you understand what I am saying. Eventually PC gaming may just die, but as long as the keyboard and mouse is not universally accepted on all console games, and as long as some PC developers stick to only the PC.. then I will continue to game on the PC. Having only consoles would be awesome! What, with gaming from the couch on typically larger displays, what's not to love?

Better to give a reason than to just say no. IMO, no the PS3 is not worth it if you're not interested in its media playing capabilities, because there is a better alternative if all you're interested in is games. I don't know about you, but when I buy something I consider if there is something that is better than what I'm buying.

If he had asked "Is the 360 worth if I'm only interested in its media playing capabilities and not games" I would have said that it is not worth it, because the PS3 is a better alternative.

If I were to buy one, I'd want to replace my PS2 and now, it seems like you just cant do that. Sony is truly confusing the public with all these PS3 SKUs and hiding behind a veil of public ignorance. Hell, I try to stay up on basically everything and I'm not sure which model is best to buy... I'd want full BC, and the newest SKUs dont support anything but a minimum of software emulation (and that doesnt play all games perfectly)

you were better off buying the higher priced launch system than what they're offering you today.

you can still find the 60gb SKU if you look at enough places, and the 80gb SKU can do BC just not as well as the 60gb. Obviously, the 40gb cannot.. although I am waiting for a firmware update to allow it. The 80gb did still have one of the two PS2 chips, the difference between the 80gb and 60gb was the 60gb had both the EE and GS chips. Now, the 40gb has neither, and thus it will require full software emulation versus partial software emulation.
