PS3 wired or wireless

a wired connection has always been consistently faster/more stable than a wireless connection for me, regardless of the technology involved

If you can hook it up wired, that is the best bet always. If not, wireless will do the job decently enough.

A wired connecting will almost always be better than wireless for speed/stability. I have FiOS also and always have super fast PSN downloads over wireless.

Are you talking about just the difference between using your wireless router in your house and an Ethernet cable? If so, 802.11g is capable of 22Mbps of actual throughput (~54Mbps peak), so if you have a decent wireless router and nothing causing interference you're not going to see any increase by running a wire to your PS3.

With the newer 802.11n wireless, you can pull >100Mbps through the air.

If you were asking about things *other than* downloads from PSN then it'd be worth talking about latency and stuff, which can certainly improve with a wired connection. But just for downloads you're not going to see any improvement as long as you have a good wireless router with good coverage in your house.

Wired is always more stable, but the only reason you'd have slower downloads is if you are too far away from the access point when wireless. And if you are too far away, then you probably need a pretty big wire.

For the most part though, this is a silly question. If you can go wired, then you could have done it and tested it yourself without asking anyone that couldn't possibly answer the question, since there is no actual answer.

It's not silly at all. It may simply be that going wired would require effort (e.g. fishing cable through walls) that he would prefer to avoid if he couldn't expect to see any gains. And I've seen quite a few people complain that the PS3's wireless can be finicky.

I think the OP is experience the issue were internet access is extremely slow using a router with the PS3. I know some people have got around this by setting up a proxy.

I swear there was a thread on this somewhere .. I remember seeing a massive difference in my download speeds when using the proxy server, but I didn't need it for everyday use so I stopped using it altogether.

Hmmm? I get 2MB/s download speeds with a g router over fios 7mb...

You get a 16mbps transfer rate using wireless on a 7mbps FIiOS connection? Wow, that is amazing! It's like your PS3 is speeding up your FiOS connection. 😛

But yes, I get a MUCH better connection using wired vs wireless. And with wireless, I had my router (802.11g) pretty much right over my PS3.

I was trying to find the thread also. I remember the topic coming up about 2 years ago.

I'm not sure about the Slims but I know the old Fat PS3s had really laggy Wi-Fi. I use a wired connection. It's in the same room as my desktop so I bought an Ethernet switch. Already had a cable running down to the basement where they router is.

The Wi-Fi connection is ok for downloading stuff off PSN or streaming SD movies, but I'd use wired for online gaming or HD streaming.
