Ladies and gentlemen, the win.

The majority of current HDTV owners today still use component hookups, not HDMI. It's an unfortunate side effect of pushing a technology early, then changing your mind at the last minute on what standards you want to use.

There's the problem. Why on earth does it need Blu-Ray then?!?!?!? If only 2-3% of the people who purchase the system can use Blu-Ray, why on earth jack up the price so much and include the crappy format.

Because it's Sony. They'll do anything to win and screw the little guy.

MS is doing it right. They lowered the price of their units and the HD-DVD drive is an add-on. That is PERFECT for the 97% of the end users who don't use it, but their price point for both will still be under the price of the PS3. Smart move on their part.

This along with hopefully a price drop just in time for the holiday season; this should seal the fate of Sony and the PS3

Yes, but if Sony is pushing the PS3 as providing "True HD" why aren't they giving the end-user the ability to get to "True HD"? There's only one or two HDTVs that can even do 1080p through components.

I agree that this is small potatoes but it is just one of many inconsistencies that Sony has been going in regards to the PS3.

If you ask me, both of the companies are crazy. They're trying too hard to merge all sorts of other functionality with what ostensibly was supposed to be a pure gaming machine. Now with the 360 I will admit that many of the features they've included were the features people modded their XBoxes to get -- the media streaming via Windows Media Connect pretty much addresses most concerns -- but it's still overkill.

Now Nintendo has the right idea: "This is a gaming system. It is JUST a gaming system, and look, it's cheap! With cheap games! Fun cheap games! Go on, buy your 360 or PS3, but make sure you buy a Wii on the side, so you can unwind with a nice game of Super Mario every now and then." No extra fluff, no strange features and a huge price, just a cheap system with nothing but gaming and gaming-related goodness packed inside. I am so buying one.

Actually I don't want Sony to "fail" with the PS3, but I want it to lose considerable marketshare to MS. They need to be taught a lesson from their mistakes.

Everyone needs competition.

Because some of us aren't morons like others who just hate MS because it's the new trend and think it's "cool".

Xbox 360 is the best console out. Why would I hate it and not have them get more marketshare in that segment? If it's a good product, it's a good product.

FYI - The Wii will play DVDs with the purchase of an add-on similar to the one the Xbox had.

if you count gross console sales, sony's worldwide console marketshare (for the outgoing generation) is about 66%. nintendo and MS split the remainder pretty evenly.

i wouldn't be at all shocked if the next round is 40/30/30 nintendo/ms/sony

what exactly is so great about the 360? Seriousy...there are very few decent games for it. The graphics are underwhelming. There are reliability issues.

Which is what you can say about every system for the first year.

The 360 has some great games out now and what looks like more coming out this fall. Let's not forget Xbox Live and Live Arcade.

The PS3 will have a limited selection of games and an even more limited availability of consoles (not to mention reliability issues).

The 360 has the sweet spot right now.

I can't speak of "reliability issues". Do you have any proof that the +/- is more than what any other system has? I've heard a few peoples systems being bad, but what happen when the PS2 launched? What about their DVD drives failing? Every electronic system is going to have a failure rate.

The games are picking up steam. Just Cause, Dead Rising, new Madden's, Gears of War and many others around the corner. It takes time to create really good games. Again, the graphics will mature with age. Plus, from what I can tell, the graphics are about the same as the PS3 when utilized properly (i.e. Gears of War). And that's with a 1 year technology disadvantage.

Blu-ray also gives Sony a huge advantage in storage capacity for their games. If you don't have an HDTV or don't care to purchase one, then you obviously aren't the target demographic for the premium PS3 bundle. Either buy the cheaper PS3 SKU or get a Wii or 360. The PS3 premium will be the only console with an HDMI port.

What is with all of the bitching? There is a console for everybody, at virtually every price level. Decide how much you want to pay and/or how long you're willing to wait. Then buy a new console. Nobody's holding a gun to your head.

Wii
Wii with DVD add-on
360 base
360 with hdd bundle
360 with HD-DVD bundle
PS3 base with Blu-ray
PS3 premium with Blu-ray and HDMI ports

Does anyone know when the major retailers will start doing pre-orders for the PS3?

Where are you getting an HDMI cable for $5?

You have fun trying to connect everything with 1.5ft of cable.

What % of people have HDMI connections on their TV's? VERY little, and if it shaves $10.00 off the already high price of the console - makes perfect sense to me.

lol@1.5ft

Do you have mini-house where everything is super close together?

10 feet is $7.

I'd question the quality of cables that cheap. Like I said, a decent HDMI cable is going to be $20-$50 depending on the length.
