PS3 will not autosave anymore on any game

I have a friend who's kid shut the PS3 off in the middle of an autosave. After he did this, none of his games will autosave anymore. I don't believe he has ever run the software updates either.

Any suggestions?

[edit] fixed typo.

Would replacing his hard drive fix the problem? Or running software updates?

Why not try the updates first?

If that fails, next would be to reformat the drive using Sony's normal method in The Friendly Manual (it should be in the drive swapping steps).

Update:

My friend managed to get his PS3 wireless connection to the internet. Apparently running the software update corrected the autosave problem.

That was my suggestion to him first so glad it worked.
