PS3 vs. XBox 360 w/ MKV

Try this program GOTsent. I've used it several times without a problem.

How it works (for now)

During conversion to MP4, a dts or ac3 file and a h264 file are extracted, the ac3/dts is converted to aac, the h264 header is updated to h264 level 4.1 (for all profiles) to play on PS3, after which the aac and the h264 are merged again. After the merge, the temp files are deleted, and the file is split in almost equal sized parts (< 4 GB) if the file is > 4GB.

I use that GOTSent program that tw1164 linked to. Converting a 1.2 gb MKV file takes only a few minutes to convert to an mp4 file which can be played on the 360.

Seriously? I've been converting to WMV files which took over a day straight to do and the quality still took a bit of a hit.

How long does it take, and is there any reduction in quality? I would assume this is just removing the audio/video component from the MKV "package".

360 supports DIVX and XVID now. I thought those were MPEG-4.

MPEG-4 ASP. A5 should have specified MPEG-4 AVC, which is what h.264 is.

You can wrap your divx/xvid + ac3 in the .avi container and get surround sound. I do not think you can stick ac3 in to the .mp4/.m4v containers for the Xbox360...but I haven't tried.

Do you lose any of the HD quality in the conversion process?

Each time I try this, I just end up with a .cmp file that doesn't do anything. Is that what's supposed to happen?

no reduction in quality. I have a P4 2.5ghz and it takes between 5-10 minutes to convert a 1.2 gig video.

There is an option in the GOTSent program called use safe-sync, or something like that. I don't have it here at work but I need to check that every time or I don't get a file.

Argh, I'll have to play around with it later. Checking that option amounts to the same effect--I can see the files being created, but they are deleted at the end.

No, but your audio is reduced to 2 channel.
