PS3 VS 360 GPU

No offense but does it really matter?

They both have their strengths and weaknesses (which I don't even know, LOL)

Let's keep it at that. 🙂

Yeah, for all intents and purposes, they are pretty much equal. It just depends on how talented the devs are and how much they can get out of them.

Actually,

The Xbox 360 GPU is somewhat a mix between an X1800 and X1900.

The PS3 is more of a 7800GTX on a smaller die and I believe slower clocks.

In games, I would think the 360 GPU is better at shader-heavy games while the PS3 is better and RAW GPU power.

It doesn't really matter but if all we had to talk about were things that mattered then these forums wouldn't even exist.

I actually think the 360's GPU has many advantages over the RSX like the eDRAM die, the unified shader architecture and a few other stuff (like DirectX), it's not a huge difference since both console are terrible in terms of processing power but I do think the PS3 is highly unbalanced, it's processor is way too good (at least potentially) compared to it's relatively weak GPU.

They both are on the low-end of the graphics spectrum so it doesn't make a difference, both are unimpressive, consoles should be appreciated for their software, unlike PCs, discussion of hardware (at the silicon level at least) in consoles is, by all means, a pretty shallow and limited discussion, it's just better to talk about the games.

The 360 GPU wasnt based on any prior PC cards and was built totally custom from the ground up and introduced new features like Unified shaders and the Edram.

RSX is just a regular ol Geforce 7.

360 gets the edge.

Google 360 vs PS3 and you will see video of both, which for the most part shows the 360 as the better, but the PS3 is starting to make huge improvements with new games coming out. So its really a dmaned if you do damned if you dont. The clincher for me however was the fact that Sony dropped backwards for the newer PS3 where the 360 does backwards with most old xbox games, and add more every month, plus it upscales everything to 1080I/P. this means dvd movies, and even xbox games are upscaled to 1080. Even though I have both a ton of xbox and 360 games, PS3 lost out because I am almost able to put my xbox 1 away for good and have just one unit out rather then 2 like I would have if I got a PS3.

Plus it doesnt hurt that you can buy a broken rrod 360 cheap as dirt, and are very easy to fix, so it was $65 for a broken 360, or $200+ for a broken PS3 or more for new.
Im very happy with the 360, and from videos I saw of the two against each other, game play, atleast for the ones I own, look better on it.

Didn't Sony design the Cell to off-load a bunch of stuff from the GPU? That would make it an apples/oranges comparison.

I was always under the impression that the 360 has the far superior GPU but that the PS3 is (or will be) capable of better graphics due to its utilization of all the Cell processor's cores.

Regardless, so far it has resulted in and will most likely continue to be a wash. Look at the Xbox vs. PS2 in the last generation, the Xbox was far superior technically and yet the only games that took advantage of that extra power were the Xbox's first party titles. Developers making a multi-platform title almost always design for the less-powerful system as a lowest common denominator baseline first. Of course, that doesn't apply to massive differences in technology ala the 360/PS3 vs. the Wii.

Yeah; the Cell is a freakin' beast. I'm pretty sure it handles a lot of what's going on on the PS3 (and that's why PS3 games look comparably better than most 360 games). Also, people are REALLY starting to figure out the ins and outs of the PS3 and some of the new games (MGS4, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2) are looking REALLY nice.

If the games are coded properly, shouldn't it look the same on both systems? It doesn't matter if my computer's video card is a 7900 or 8800; it should look exactly the same when playing the same game at the same settings.

The Cell would be able to offload better if they shared memory, since they didn't I can't see many devs taking advantage of the cell for video processing. The 360 GPU btw is like an alpha design to the HD2900 core that ATI made. IMO the GPU in the 360 is better, while the Cell has more processing power than the 360 CPU, except it's not perfectly designed for what games do. TBH the systems powers are about even, I'd personally put a slight nod into the 360s corner, but whatever. They're close enough it doesn't matter. You can look at launch titles that were on both consoles and see the difference in graphics noticebly, but other than that they're pretty neck and neck. Also, don't use the "but the PS3 came out after the 360" nonsense, devs had final dev kits around the same time(within a month or two) of each other for both consoles so both should be as polished.
