PS3 vs 360 gaming questions

I do not own either system.

I am thinking of getting a PS3 to play COD4 but heard you cannot join in a game you choose and it will drop you in one at random so it would be by luck to play with a friend. Is that the same for the 360 where you cannot join a game with your friend?

I have a PS3 and it depends on the game. All the games I've played you can invite your friends. I don't have COD4 so I can't comment on that.

I think I worded it wrong. I am trying to explain that if I am on a PS3 playing COD4 can you join a game that your friend is in or is it random where you will end up? Basically I want to play in the same game my friend would be in through the PSN or whatever it is. Assuming we both have PS3's.

Also if we both owned xbox's and I wanted to play in the same game of COD4 on xbox live could we play together on the same team or even the same game?

I'm not sure if you're able to join a game they're already in...but I do know you can start a "party" and play together that way.

If you join their game in progress you might get put on the other team. If you start a party and do it that way you'll always be on their team. I assume it's the same for both versions.

So on the PS3 you can pick the game your friend is in but you might not be on the same team is the only thing?

No. There is a private lobby, a game lobby, and a friends list. You can invite anyone from your friends list to join your private lobby. Then you choose the game type you want to play (team deathmatch, ground war, etc) and matchmaking will find a game for the both of you. You will move in and out of games lobbies together, and you will be on the same team. Basically, when someone joins your private lobby, from there on, your lobby is treated just like a single player (assuming your lobby doesn't contain more players than allowed on a single team).

It's not as functional as the steam friends list though. I don't know of a way to view your friends list and auto-join their current game. They will have to exit their game, join your lobby, and then you can enter a game together.

And just a heads up, not all game types in CoD4 allow groups, like mercenary team deathmatch.
