Looks like noone has mentioned this so far, but the 40GB model is apparently quieter than the 80GB and 60GB models, particularly the 60GB. People have been saying on AVSforum that they were forced to sell of their 60GB and buy a 40GB because the fan sound was too disturbing in their HT setup.

The 40GB is cooler and quieter, and the new MGS bundle 80GB may be too if it now uses the 65nm Cell processor.

The 60GB is quiet if it's well-ventilated, but can be noisy in an enclosed AV rack with poor airflow. On the bright side it won't overheat and die it will just get louder.

Yeah. I'd wager the MGS4 80 GB will be as quiet as the 40 GB (which means pretty much silent in a typical living room, sitting a couple yards away).

Yes, and let me tell you, these guys either must have dog hearing or their PS3 is defective. My 60GB is quiet as hell. I really can't even hear it if I put my ear to it. However, if it starts to get hot, yes, it does get loud, but that is if the fan is spinning full tilt and if it is, you've got a problem somewhere. You either have an air circulation problem in your AV rack, or again, you have a defective PS3.

But if you'd like, you can wait until June when the new PS3 comes out with the cooler running processor. The best of both worlds, cooler running chip AND backwards compatibility. 🙂

Ok, so PS3 in the MGS bundle will have a newer processor than the current crop of PS3s? I'm planning on getting the 40GB, but if the PS3 in the MGS bundle has a newer processor, then I might as well wait. June's not that far away anyway.

Yes, the new MGS PS3 in June will have the cooler running processor. That's what I'm recommending the people around me to hold off for. No need to drop $500 now, when the new model is so close. It also comes with a DS3 controller. 😉

$399 40 GB: PS1 BC only, no-rumble Sixaxis

$499 80 MGS4 bundle: PS2 BC >80% *, rumble Dual Shock 3, Metal Gear game, memory card reader, extra 40GB space

* see here to check for BC problems: Sony BC database

I read they'll have the PS3 Gun Metal 40GB + MGS4 + DS3 very limited bundle in NA too. But I don't really like the color. I think I'm gonna go w/ the 80GB MGS4 bundle.

The 40gb already has the cooler running 65nm cpu.

And as far as the 80gb MGS4 pack, I wouldnt count on any ps2 BC. The only reason the 80gb Motorstorm ps3 did it was because even though it didnt have the ps2 cpu like the 60/20 gb models did, it still had the ps2 gpu. I think they have removed that from all ps3s from now on.

Ooooooooo, that's not good. Well, we'll see.

Do you have a link for this? I haven't heard either way but it would be a stupid move by Sony.

WHAT?! Now I'm totally confused.

60 GB and 20 GB (ie, launch versions) had the "old" 90nm chips. They are considered the loudest of the PS3 versions, though the loudness varies. Both are full PS2 backwards compatible because they both have the PS2 CPU and GPU.

Currently available 80 GB seems to have "old" 90 nm chips, too. Or perhaps a mix of "old" 90nm chips and "new" 65 nm chips. I'm not sure. Anyway, I think people rank it quieter than the 60/20GB versions, but louder than the 40 GB versions. It has limited PS2 backwards compatibility because it has the PS2 GPU and not the CPU (or vice-versa, I forget).

40 GB has "new" 65 nm chips. It is considered silent. It has no PS2 backwards compatibility because it has neither the PS2 CPU or GPU.

Therefore, most people expect that the MGS4 80GB bundle will also have the "new" 65 nm chips the 40 GB has. We also expect it will be silent the way the 40 GB is silent.

What's debated is whether the MGS4 80GB bundle will have the same (limited) backwards compatibility that the current 80 GB version has, or if it will have no backwards compatibility the way the 40 GB has none.

Hope that clears things up.

This was in February, but Al De Leon, PR Manager, SCEA claimed the MGS 80GB will have BC:

Yes, similar to the Motorstorm bundle, the new MGS4 bundle features an 80GB PS3 with some PS2 backwards compatibility."

So unless someone has a more recent link of comments from Sony, odds are good that the 80GB will still have BC.

It better have. It's the only reason I'm waiting for the 80GB. Is there a release date for it yet? I might have to take the day off to be able to get one.
