Ive been out of the loop for a while, but now that im ready to buy a ps3, it looks like they discontinued the 80gb version. It is to my understanding that the 40gb version doesnt support backwards compatibility, which makes me immediately want the 80gb.

Do they have plans for a new version to replace the 80gb? if so when?

Is my thinking the 40gb doesnt do backwards compatibility correct?

Thanks.

The Metal Gear Solid 4 Bundle is the 80GB

MSRP $499.99

It basically replaces the old SKU.

I think it's also for them to release a new SKU that bundles dualshock3 because all current SKU's are for the regular Sixaxis controller.

It should also come with a cooler running processor, and like others have said, a DS3 controller. Estimated release date, sometime in June. That's the one I'm waiting for.

Why do people say SKU? Is it because you worked in retail or because you are huge nerds?

They probably worked in retail. A huge percentage of the population has done so, you know.

Yea we get to say it because we worked minimum wage jobs while dealing with the idiotic/irate public.

I don't really want to say "another product in an established line of products"

is it so wrong to adhere to what they are actually called? They aren't called the 40gb and 80gb 'versions'. They are SKUs. :p

How about UPCs ;)

I bet the new 80gb PS3 will have many different SKUs between Sony, Walmart, BestBuy, and all the other retailers. Same UPC though. :p

You've got to read between the lines. What he's trying to say is, "I'm retarded. Can you dumb it down for me so even I can understand?" And the answer is, of course I can. In the future, I will refer to the new PS3 SKU as, "the PS3 that comes with the shaky controller."

You got me there, I just find it impossible to understand retail monkey lingo. Thanks for dumbing it down for me, you're like Stephen Hawking! I'm in awe.

I'll pretend you're serious:
The PS3 uses standard HDMI cables, and standard optical digital cables too.

It's only if you want component out that you need a PS3 specific cable that uses the AV connector, and even that uses the same design (and same cables) as the PS2.

Sigh... don't tell anybody I pwnd myself. This of course wouldn't happen if I have a PS3 in front of me. I guess I can just use the component video from my PS2.

Well, hearing all this, ive decided im going to try and find a 20gb or 60gb PS3 off of ebay. I never had a PS2, and the backwards compatibility is a big part of this purchase.

Thanks for the help, now I somehow need to find a discontinued PS3.

Looks like noone has mentioned this so far, but the 40GB model is apparently quieter than the 80GB and 60GB models, particularly the 60GB. People have been saying on AVSforum that they were forced to sell off their 60GB and buy a 40GB because the fan sound was too disturbing in their HT setup.
