PS3 to join with proteins!

"Via a partnership between Sony and the Folding@home distributed computing project, a client is being developed that will allow idle Cell Processors to turn their considerable computational power from crunching the polygons that makeup curvaceous videogame breasts to crunching the math of folding proteins that hold the secret to curing cancer. Like the old SETI@home project that harnessed idle PCs to analyze masses of data collected by radio telescopes in hopes of discovering signals from another world, the Folding@home project will rely upon an army of PlayStation 3s rather than expensive super computers."

So even consoles will play now 🙂

Who leaves their console system on all the time though, even when not in use? That's kinda strange. Cool, but kinda strange.

They are making this sound like it will really fly through the WUs.

They will probably have to determine the points for these WUs with a PS3 and not the regular benchmark P4 @2.8 computer. Otherwise it will not seem fair to those of us with brand new Core 2 Duo and AMD X2 computers!

I hope this works as well as they say it will.

My kid may get a PS3 he doesn't want for Christmas, but he will have to get straight A's to get a game with it 😀

100 GigaFlops for that kind of money is pretty okay. And 100 GFlops seems reasonable compared to the practical results at IBM - considering the Net overhead time and the like... 🙂
