PS3 To Be Region Free

In a QA session following the platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President Phil Harrison confirmed what was heavily demanded for import gamers all over the world and yet previously thought unthinkable for a major corporation: the PS3 will be region-free for gaming.

IMHO, this is bigger than any other PS3 news outside of backwards compatability.

Sony has also ditched the boomerang controller.

There are several 360 titles that are region free already. I think only the MS Studio titles have region locks on them.

Trying to get a PS3 through the New Year is going to be worse than trying to get a 360 through this past year IMHO. Only 1 million units at launch divided between 3 territories. And that is IF things go as Sony has planned.

The eBaying is going to be just as insane if not more.

If you are serious about buying it, you don't even need two days to complete your preorder.

Lazlow was on the Opie and Anthony show the other day (Tues, IIRC). He mentioned that he thought the PS3 would be far beyond the XBOX360 and that Microsoft released the 360 too early.

The trick is to buy 2, sell one on ebay and break even (or make a small profit)

Region free hasn't hurt the DS any. And if games are region free, the need for modchips goes down...

Wow, region free. That probably affects a whole 1% of the people buying a PS3. Also, I don't really find this news surprising given their last system (PSP) was region free for games.
