PS3 Slim noise problem

I've had my Slim for about a year, but just noticed this recently. I had the TV, etc... down low and went by the PS3 and heard a slight buzz noise coming from the back of the console. At first I thought it was the fan, but it will also make this noise when the system is turned off.

It seems to be louder when the system is on for awhile, and its very faint when its turned off (you have to put your ear near the console to hear it when its off). It sounds like its coming for the same area where the power cord plugs into the back. When you unplug the PS3 the noise stops. Its not noticeable from my seat.

I think its something to do with the power supply. Other than this the system runs fine, and cool with very little fan noise.

Just wondering if it was normal for the PS3 Slim's power supply to make a little noise, or if this is something I should call Sony about and get a replacement system?

Slim is pretty recent, if yours is still under warranty, they'll give you no issues whatsoever. SCEA has great costumer support.

Make sure to call SONY...

The person that answers will try to help you troubleshoot if you want, otherwise, they will send you an email with all the instructions for the RMA process. Be prepared to pay maybe...$20 dollars to ship it to texas. I would get the insurance for another $20 just in case. When my fans died out, it took them about 2 weeks from the day i sent it, to the day it arrived at my door. Make sure you pack it well and include all the info they ask, don't want them shipping it back to you broken. :)

They don't send a box anymore? I know my friend had to send in his 60GB and they shipped him a return box.

They didn't send me one when i RMA'd my PS3 for the fan issue, i didn't mind as much though, i got a buddy who works at UPS and gave me a discount and free insurance on the package. Be sure to ask the rep if they'll send you one.

Sony agreed that if I could hear it there was probably something wrong, and wanted me to send it in to them so they can look at it.

One odd thing is right now the power supply is quiet. I left the system unplugged all night/today, and now when I plugged it back in the noise is gone. Not sure if it will return or not, but Sony said my prepaid box should arrive in 3 to 5 business days. I guess I need to keep an eye/ear on it until the box arrives to see if the noise returns.

I would still send it, you never know if it might return. Because then if i blows after the 27th, you're screwed.

Well it didn't take long. I just checked and its buzzing again. They told me that I might get my same unit back depending on what needed to be replaced, and it would take about 15 days to get it back once they received it.

I've never had problems calling sony even after the warranty expired. I'm just wondering how other people have "horror stories" about SONY.

The same way that people have had terrible times with MS support, but I haven't had any issues.

I've never had an issue with Sony the 2 times i had to send in my consoles, my ps2's dvd lens died and one of my ps3s fans stopped working, no questions asked, they fixed it and shipped back my actual console instead of some cheap refub ( i marked it lol)

Just sounds like some electrical component noise, maybe from a capacitor or something. It's pretty common in most modern electronics, though a properly designed machine with quality components shouldn't exhibit this. Of course there is variance in production, so it can happen anywhere.

I wouldn't be worried about it failing, but might as well get it repaired/replaced while you've got it under warranty.
