Calling all ps3 slim owners...

I've just purchased a ps3 slim and I've been noticing that the console has been getting very hot, basically within 20 minutes of use. The hottest areas are along the back plate where the connectors are, especially on the left side, and along the bottom of the console, especially the middle left side. I have the console in an open area, nothing is blocking the air vents. The fan appears to be running fine, i hear a humming sound and feel a faint breeze of air venting out of the back.

For all ps3 slim owners here, does your console also get very hot? Should i take it back to the store?

I don't have one but I'm expecting to hear that it's normal. My launch PS3 gets ridiculously hot but it has never caused a problem.

The smaller GPU/CPU advancements have been accompanied by less and less cooling, hence, I expect that the temps will still stay relatively high.

My PS3 (fat one) has been a space heater for as long as I've owned it, and it still hasn't broken down yet (though, it broke my XBox since my XBox 360 was adjacent to it, and my PS3 being on overheated the XBox 360, lulz.)

IIRC, my "fat" PS3 run very hot as well, but it sits on its own shelf in a wide open space, so no biggie :)

I have a slim but haven't really played it yet. Still playing Batman on 360. Should be done with that tonight so maybe I'll start uncharted and let you know.

Edit: but I actually heard that 3.0 firmware is causing lockups in Uncharted....

I got a ps3 slim and it runs much cooler than my previous fat ps3. I use my ps3 for playing blu-rays mostly..and after an hour the air is warm and the casing is room temp.

Yah, mine gets warm too, the fat 60gb model. Ideally, you should keep it in a cool room away from any other heat sources.

my fat ps3 runs hot too so I don't see any issue

issues arise when its in a blocked up location and its not getting enough air so the fan goes turbo mode and is extremely loud and the ps3 is verry hot

My launch 60gb, also it was the one fan design (two fan designs for the launch models, depending on manufacturing location) that was quite loud... well, if the room the PS3 is in is warm, that beast gets quite audible. Still a little quieter than the 360s, but it makes its presence known, especially in softer scenes of blu-ray movies. That gets a little annoying.

As long as my 60gb keeps running, I'll stick with it. But I wouldn't mind the slightly smaller, much quieter Slim model. Heard that thing is basically silent.

But OP, the places you described as hot are exactly where the hot things are placed. Middle left on the bottom is near the CPU and GPU, and is where the massive heat sink fan assembly is in the Slim. On the back of the unit, is where the internal power supply is. Power supplies get quite warm.

We realize this...we just let him know that our PS3 "fats" also run hot, so it's no big deal.

just got a slim too, and I can hear the fan spinning, I thought it was supposed to be silent and a bit quieter than fatty?

since the controller is like $42, and I will need at least one more, I am actually thinking about returning my cheapie Insignia $99 blu-ray player and get another PS3.

Don't confuse efficient cooling with overheating. Seems like some people are worried their units are overheating and running hot. Be glad all that heat is coming out and not staying in the unit. As someone mentioned above, it's hot where it should be because that's where all the hot air is blowing out.

Uncharted is messed up with Firmware 3, and worked great with 2.80 on my Slim.

Uncharted was the only game I got with my Slim so I guess I'll have to pickup another game if I want to use the PS3. I hope a fix is coming out for this soon.

As far as the heat. It seems warm, but its not hot. I've noticed that most of the heat comes from the same area you mentioned. I wouldn't worry about it.

All I can say is.. It's not a XBox 360.

Neither is the Xbox 360 anymore, the Jasper failure rate is apparently just as low as the PS3.

The 360 drive is still really loud playing games though, so it's a good thing you can install to the HD.

Jasper hasn't been around long enough to determine that and it still isn't the only one in stores by a long shot.

Great, somehow, a post about the PS3 Slim's heat output has turned into an XBOX 360 bashing thread.

Not bashing if it's true :D
I own both, so I hope my Xbox 360 has a long life, but I'm not convinced yet.

Yeap, my fatty PS3 is a freaking oven when playing games. I open the glass door on my entertainment center when running Folding@Home overnight on it, because it went into thermal overload one night when I didn't.

Amen to that. I probably would've returned my Jasper 360 if the install to HDD option wasn't available. I still can't fathom why it is so loud when my $25 DVD burner in my PC is dead silent though. Maybe they should have a quiet setting on the optical drive in the firmware or something, so those of us that want silence can give up a bit of performance to achieve it...or maybe they could just release larger HDDs at non-extortionate prices!!

I have a PS3 slim and it gets quite warm, but it is in an open shelf area (not enclosed like some of the TV stands I have seen) so it's not a big deal to me. The main thing is to make sure it's in a well ventilated area, same as you would do with a computer.

My point was that we already know the fatties run hot. The slims are supposed to be significantly cooler, hence his concern.

I'm thinking he didn't really care about the fatties judging by what he posted. We all know they're built to take it.

I notice a lot of hot air coming out the Slim, but I think that's a good thing. It's a little space and regardless of the smaller CPU die size, it's going to generate some serious heat, it's when hot air isn't pouring out of the vents that you should be worried.
