PS3 Slim 40nm RSX availability *confirmed*

Was wondering if anyone has seen the new PS3 Slim with the 40nm RSX GPU in the wild in any US stores yet?

If not, was there any ETA when these would start to appear?

Edit:
The new PS3 Slims are now out in the wild that contain the 40nm RSX GPU. Seems the best bets right now are Target and Fry's stores, just make sure to verify the model number of CECH-2101A. Best Buy are getting them in as well, but due to higher foot traffic and limited supply, will be harder to find them on the shelf there. No word on availability at Wal-Mart.

I now have one bought from Target in central Florida. The guy at the counter said they got them in two days ago.

I haven't really heard anything about this. Any chance it would be accompanied by a price reduction?

There is no official response on any kind of upcoming price reduction by Sony, nor any rumors from the more reliable channels that it is going to happen.

Before the announcement of the 40nm GPU refresh I was wondering if something was up because it was getting near impossible of finding the 4th gen 250GB PS3 Slims at the local retailers and was wondering if something was coming down the pipes to replace/update it.

The PS3 is selling almost as many units as the 360 in the US despite the Arcade being $100 less, so my guess is Sony is going to try to make a little money from their cost reduction and wait for the next 360 price drop before cutting the PS3 price.

They were telling investors last year that they didn't want to keep losing money to build market share, and this year they were willing to lose sales from bare shelves rather than keep making the more expensive units while waiting for the 40nm supplies to catch up.

Yep I got a $100 gift card to gamestop and none have any slims within 50 miles of me have any.

I'd wait for some tech site to reveal the serial number/whatever on the box.
According to the DailyTech news post the new PS3 slim SKU number is CECH-2100A.

*Edit - Further searching points to the CECH-2100 being the model number for Japan with CECH-2101 being the model number for the US. The A denoting a 120GB drive and B denoting a 250GB drive.

So the SKU# is on the box or the console itself?
It should be on the bottom of the console, that is where it is located on my old fat 60GB PS3. However I do believe that they align up a hole in the box where you can see this from the outside of the retail packaging.

So I'm a bit behind here.. What's the deal with the 40nm GPU? Any performance increase or is it just to save money?

It's a console, no performance increases ever. Just smaller to save money.

Less heat? Although I've never had heat issues with a PS3....but if all the size design and layout is th same, then perhaps the fan will be quieter as well....but again I have absolutely no issues with the ps3slim so i'm just speculating.

I'm amazed that PS3slims still have supply issues. IS it just horrible supply chain management by Sony, or are they truly selling that many? If that was the case, I'd expect to see the PS3/Xbox360 gap shrink a little (Although its pretty big from what I remember...I don't really care so as long as I have my games haha)

Yea it should bring less heat as well and yes I'm pissed about not being able to get a PS3. Every gamestop I've been calling every couple days never has one and said they've been in very low supply since Xmas which was months ago. I can't watch any of my blu-ray movies until I get one.

You know Gamestop isn't the only place to get one? I got mine at the local Sears (granted back in January). Your local Walmart might have some. I'm guessing you want to get it B&M for some reason, but if not you can almost certainly find one online.

The new slim is lighter due to a less robust heatsink needed for the GPU. It also drops the operational wattage from 73W to 60W making it run cooler, and theoretically, less prone to failure. So there are a few benefits for the consumer. The older PS3s (1st and 2nd gen) ran around 180W.

I've noticed the 120GB Slims showing up again at Target. Everywhere else is always out of stock.

I know but I have a $150 gift card to gamestop so don't want to get it anywhere else.

Makes sense. I don't know how long you are willing to wait, but you could sell the gift card at a slight loss and buy the console elsewhere.

Another, more unscrupulous option; you could buy something like a 360 or Wii with the gift card, then return it for a refund. I don't know if they would just give you a gift card in that amount as a refund, but it's a thought.

Hmm very interesting :sneaky:

Thanks for that.

One might luck out depending on whose working. The receipt would show a gift card being used therefor that's likely the way they will refund it.

Been seeing some claims going around that some Best Buys are getting the new model in today. Went to the local BB to verify this. They were out of stock of them for at least the last month. Got my hopes up in seeing from a distance they were back in stock, but upon closer inspection, they were the older slim model.

Stolen from dmjunkie at slickdeals:
Frys may be carrying the new model, though finding it in stock is another matter.
