PS3 set up questions ... with HDMI

Ok ... I just bought a PS3 last weekend. Now I am in the process of trying to get it set up in HD. So here is what I am trying to do. Cable box/DVR connected to TV with HDMI. PS3 connected to AV receiver with HDMI in .. the HDMI out (monitor) to the TV. PS3 will play movies and I get sound only from the TV speakers.

DO I need to run the cables that came with the PS3 to the AV receiver for audio in? or will this confuse the PS3 having HDMI and the other cables connected?

FWIW the receiver is a Sony HT-DDW900

I would not use the RCA cables that come with the PS3 for audio. You have a receiver, you ought to be playing in surround sound. I don't know anything about HDMI audio and receivers, but if the receiver can't handle HDMI audio then you ought to use optical audio at least.

HDMI carries 5.1 audio to most / all receivers with HDMI inputs. You might need to read the manual for the receiver to set the mapping for the audio to one of the buttons on the receiver's remote like "video 1"

If you have the 1 in 1,000 receiver that -doesn't- get audio from the HDMI then use an optical digital cable like mugs suggested so you get 5.1 instead of stereo.

The only optical in I have says video .... would that carry video and audio in?

and here is a link to my manuals for the receiver ..

OKay does your tv have an audio out? Just connect your tv's audio out to the receiver and you should get sound..

From that it seems like the receiver does not decode audio from HDMI.

That means you attach should -2- cables to the PS3: HDMI for video and optical digital for 5.1 audio. Run both to the receiver, an HDMI cable to the TV, and turn off or mute the TV sound.

It looks like one optical is pre-assigned for video-2 and so is one of the 2 HDMI inputs. If you connect to those two the video 2 button on the remote should give you audio and video.

If you use video-1 and the DVD HDMI inputs you may need to go to the HDMI section and change the first one from DVD to video-1

Thanks, I will try that tomorrow. I thought I had a fiber optical cable somewhere ....

I will have to go to CC tomorrow and over pay for one. Not gonna go right now .... we have about 1.5" of sleet on the ground/roads.

Is your receiver just HDMI passthrough or does it actually take in the audio portion of the cable?

I have a separate optical audio to my receiver. Oh, and get it at monoprice hehe.

Looks like just passthrough, the manual linked above says "the sound will only come from the TV"

So if the sound will only come from the TV ... will using a fiber optic cable from the PS3 to receiver do any good?

Yes. The HDMI is ignored by the receiver and passed through to the TV, so using just the HDMI you only get TV sound. (You could just connect the HDMI from the PS3 to TV if you want.)

The optical digital in is a 5.1 audio input for the receiver to use.

Is it worth paying an extra $50 to get it a few days earlier? If you can get one for < $15, go for it. But last time I went to CC, I couldn't find ANY A/V cables that cost less than $50. Crazy sons of bitches they are.

Yeah I will probably order it from monoprice. Sad thing is .... I just got a package from them today. Wish I would have known ... or researched better. Either way though .. even shipped from Mono its less than $10.

So why even have the HDMI inputs on the receiver?

Presumably it switches between HDMI inputs... but I haven't looked at the manual.

The receiver switches 2 x HDMI inputs to one output, but if you have enough inputs on your TV you can ignore the receiver for the video part and attach the PS3 HDMI cable directly to the TV. Then attach the optical cable to the receiver just for audio.

Well more money wasted ... hooked the PS3 up to the TV with the HDMI cable and used the optical cable for the receiver. No sound from the receiver, just the TV.

Did you check the setup for the receiver, to see which remote button the optical in jack is mapped to?

Did you go into the PS3 setup and turn on the optical out?

I even tried the optical out on the TV ... still nothing.

My receiver will say "unlock" when I turn it to the channel that the optical cable in on.

You need to go into the PS3 menus and make sure that the audio options are set up correctly. You have to tell it to output audio via the optical cable.
