aesthetically better looking

I happen to think the Slim looks a lot better. It is less shiny, but I really don't like the look of the big old fat one. But if you do not own a PS2, then the 60GB is the better choice. God of War I and II are out for PS3 now, but there are other PS2 games worth pursuing too.

Everyone is missing the point that my 60gb is NTSC from the US, and I live in Australia. I only have a couple PS2 games. PS3 games don't worry me, and Blu-Ray isn't that much of a hassle since many are region free. But I don't know if anyone in this country would want to buy a PS3 from the States.

It would've helped if you told us that in the beginning. If you're not going to play American PS2 games, give/sell it to someone who will put it to better use. But I think you already knew that already.

He mentioned it in the thread. People just tend to skip all the replies.

By post #31 a thread can have a life of its own. People need to give as much info as possible in the OP.

Then keep it. There is no functional difference. The only major changes outside appearance is that the Slim model cannot have Linux installed to it.

Whoa, is this true? And if so, are there any models out right now that you can install Linux?

Depends on your useage, the Slim supports HDMI CEC and can output non processed HD audio standards which the fat can't. Personally I would much rather have a fat BC model then a new slim, but if you are really interested in it as a media device the slim does have a couple advantages over the fat(HDMI-CEC is a big one for a lot of people, as is the new audio support).

My old man has a big ol' classic PS3, but I don't know which model it is and I think he got rid of the box. I know how to tell the HDD size, but weren't there different variations of the system that had the same HDD size? I'm curious as I'm thinking of getting a PS3 and he only uses his as a BD player, so I'd like to determine if I should buy a Slim or buy his old one and have him get a Slim. How can I tell its model and therefore functionality?

Go to Settings then System Settings then System Information. It should list the hard drive size there.

The 20 and 60GB have full PS2 backwards compatibility. There are 2 versions of the 80GB PS3. One has some PS2 backwards compatibility, the other has none. All 40GB, 160GB, 120GB (Slim), and 250GB (Slim) don't play PS2 games. However all PS3 models will play PS1 games.

Why don't you take his and buy him a Blu-ray Disc player? You can find them for well under $200 now.

I noticed something that wasn't mentioned. While it's not exactly a widely used format, the fat 60GB PS3 also has SACD playback ability, for those who enjoy surround music albums.

So if you go with the Slim instead:

1) Missing USB ports
2) No SACD playback
3) No PS2 games
4) No 3rd party OS/Linux
5) No flash memory reader

Oh yeah, and if you are putting it on a rack for the home theater, it's not PIANO BLACK!!!~~~ (which fits much better with all the black gloss HT electronics these days). So an aesthetic loss :/

Backwards compatability is the only item in your list that most gamers care about at all. The presence of features that a consumer doesn't care about isn't influential on their decisions. Rather than telling them what features they are "missing", first consider if they are actually missing them.

What I'm really amazed about is how many people in this thread are completely disregarding the fact that the PS3 Slim has several years less wear and tear and is under warranty. Selling the PS3 Slim may still be the right move because the OP lives in Australia, but it is the right move in spite of the massive drawback that the PS3 60GB has less remaining life.
