PS3 Randomly stops output for a few seconds

I have this very annoying problem with my PS3. Watching a Blu-Ray, or playing a game, at some random point the video and sound will cut out for 2 seconds, and it will come back with the resolution displayed. This can happen with 45 minutes between 'flickers', or 45 seconds. It's completely random. It's almost like it's resetting the resolution. It's not a loose cable, loose cables don't cause the PS3 to re-display the resolution.

Anyone else have this problem? I tried to look up 'PS3 flickering' but that was a completely different problem.

You try resetting the video by holding the power button when its off? If so it might be time to send it in.

my 360 would randomly drop out the video when hooked up via VGA to my monitor. it had the same symptoms as it would happen never, could be 45 mins and nothing happens, or could hapen every 2 minutes.

Try it on a different TV and see if it still happens. If so, try a different HDMI cable. If it is still doing it, it's the PS3.

Maybe an HDCP handshaking issue? Speaking of which, I guess we need to know what cable you are using.

It could be the HDMI cable, the PS3, the TV, or the receiver (if you have an HDMI receiver). With that being said, I'd start by using a different HDMI cable connected to a different port on the TV (or better yet a different TV altogether).

I had the same issue on a Samsung TV. There was a handshake issue between the PS3 and HDMI-3 on my TV. I switched it around so that the PS3 fed into HDMI-1 and and the cable box fed into HDMI-3 and it solved the problem (and the cable box works fine). I didn't need to change the cables or anything like that.

Easy solution to try first.
