PS3 PSN Downloads

OMG, it's your ISP!!!! At least that's what some here will say despite many, many people complaining about the overall speed of the PSN over the last 2 years. If it's slow now, it'll always be slow until Sony upgrades or adds servers to their farm. Few people have fast speeds, most people don't.

I don't know. Two days ago, it took 1:30 hours for the Killzone Demo to get up to 45%. Yesterday, it finished up the rest in 10 minutes.

Its always been pretty quick for me, 7/1 internet connection. My Killzone 2 demo took less than 45 minutes to finish.

Down here at school, I almost always get a couple megabytes a second, downloads fly.

At home, it'll range from 10-45 minutes to download a demo (average 1GB file). At home the PS3 is connected by wireless, but even then, my downloads on a PC fluctuate too, and I seem to rarely max the connection.

Are your downloads from there really slow? I queued up about 50 demos and I just expected it to be faster.

On Speakeasy, it says its getting 3000 up and down, which it should get 15000 down and 5000 up.

I have it in the DMZ, and I have ports forwarded to it. The only thing I don't have is the UPnP, but that should be redundant with the ports right? I think I have 80, 443, 10070-10080, 5223, 3478-3479

So speakeasy is currently saying you are only reaching around 3000 down/up at the moment? So, doesn't that mean your ISP is kind of restricting you at the moment for some reason?

First, PS3 tends to show really slow speeds on websites like Speakeasy.net and speedtest.net compared to your actual network speeds. This is nothing to worry about.

Second, I've done a "test" regarding the PSN and download speeds on 3 different ISPs. The results are as follows:

1. 1st ISP was Insight (10mbps down/ 1mbps up) = Fast download speeds on PSN (500 kilobytes per second at least, but generally more)

2. 2nd ISP was Comcast (Speeds faster than above in both areas) = Really freakin' slow download speeds. Comcast bought out Insight, so my family was running the exact same hardware, setup, etc. No network settings changed a thing.

3. 3rd ISP is my university's connection (6mpbs down/ 3-5 mbps up) = Fast download speeds with PSN (averages 1 megabyte per second with downloads).

Based on the fact that a different ISP with the exact same setup in my home as the previous ISP that got bought out provided slower speeds, I concluded that it generally comes down to an ISP issue. Moving to a university connection with technically slower download speeds (yet fast PSN downloads) gives me further evidence that it is much more likely to be an ISP issue than the PSN itself.

I've also heard of cases where the cable modem itself needs to be changed (for some unknown reason). I have heard of one case where switching from any sort of Motorola based modem to the Linksys CM100 completely fixed the issue (once again, for some unknown reason...YMMV).

Sadly, there's probably not much you can do about it, unless you want to try a new ISP or modem, but you're more likely to end up in the same situation. Though, I suppose you could always return a modem if it makes no difference...I dunno.

Keep in mind that while many people have slow PSN problems, I was once in the same boat. However, I've been able to test my PS3 on 3 ISPs, unlike the "most people" group that generally only have tested it on their one ISP or a similar ISP. If I can get good PSN speeds, it's likely not an issue on Sony's end as far as good servers go. Perhaps Sony can't shake hands nicely with certain ISPs? Since I was on Comcast for a while, I tend to blame them because of all the crap they pull on their customers (especially throttling).

My own theory is that Sony's servers tend to fall apart around peak hours. Downloads in the morning tend to be very fast for me - but during the evening, it's awful.

anyone try doing a compair between the two?

find files the are both like 800 megs d/l on xbox and time... then d/l on psn and see which is faster and by how much.. i might have to try it when i get home today.

It's some where between "hopeless" and "frustratingly slow" compared to XBL. A 1.5 gig demo on XBL can take me about 45 minutes. The same thing on PSN can take me about 4.5 days.

Yeh, it's my network.

The last system update on my PS3 took me almost 45 minutes.

For me XBL is definitely faster than PSN but it's free so I'm not going to complain too much. At least my PS3 doesn't give me 'disc read errors' every time I try to play a game. :-/

Good god, I don't think a 1.5GB demo on PSN even takes me 45 minutes. Seems like there's a lot of variability for whatever reason.

Mine is slower than downloads on my computer, or at least it seems to be. However, it is reasonably fast. Probably depends on the peak hours, your ISP, and Sony's infrastructure. PSN could be better than it is.
