My PS3 is fairly new since I got it with MGS4 80gig bundle.

It plays games fine, both PS2 and PS3 games.

I plays both of my blue-ray movies fine.

The problem is with playback of regular DVD movies.

I get wavy lines all over the screen.

Like:

Wavy lines

Also playing on of the demos bad graphics are flashing.

Orange patch

I just watched Transformers DVD in mine the other night. Not HD disc or anything just standard. And it was fine. Not sure you should be experiencing that.

I am sure someone will chime in with more info than I am able to give.

Have you tested the cables or tried different ones? Have you tried differently DVD players? Have you tried different DVD players using the same video input as the PS3? Have you tried the PS3 and DVD player with and without upscaling (480i/480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p)? Have you tried messing with the DVD settings on the PS3, especially upscaling? Don't forget, you can access video settings while watching a movie by pressing triangle and looking for the video settings (includes settings such as "noise reduction", I believe). Have you seen if changing any of those make a difference? Have you tested your PS3 on other TVs?

Actually, I'd test the PS3 on other TVs first (SDTVs and HDTVs) to single out the cause...with that, it's either the cables or the PS3 itself.

Ok I hooked it up to another old tv....DVD Playback is fine, but I had to use the original video/stereo RCA type connector. I use HMDI to hook up to the HDTV I am having the problem with. I also switched my HMDI cables around and still have the problem.

If it was the cables I would expect all video from the PS3 would have the problem. This is only during DVD play back.

Ok, so it isn't related to that specific input on the TV, right? Have you tried something other than an HDMI cable for the PS3 on that TV (ex: component)?

Is there any possible way to try a different PS3, but with the exact same setup (cables and everything, just PS3 switched out)?

Tried a different HMDI cable. Same problem with the wavy lines.

Tried the original video/stereo RCA type connector. Just fine. The TV up scaling is not as good as the PS3's.

Tried HMDI and the up scaling turned off on the PS3, again I get wavy lines.

Blu-ray Movie and games just fine.

I don't know any one with another PS3.

My comcast DVR has HMDI....Works just fine.

The worst thing you could do is call Sony about it. It's good to have tested all this out so they can narrow it down for you. I don't know why it's happening, but you may need a replacement.

My old HDTV did that with 480P inputs when it started breaking. 720P and higher looked fine but 480P or lower had lines just like that all over the tv. It finally just stopped working. Yours does it with HD inputs though so your situation is not the same as mine, but just a heads up, as mine did the same thing and broke a few months later

The problem on occurs when watching a DVD on the PS3.

My cable box which is also has HDMI does not have the problem.

I have a picture of the problem that I will post tonight.

I wonder if there's a mismatch between video settings for the TV and PS3, for example if the TV is really 720p native (and just accepts 1080i/p) but you've told the PS3 that it's 1080 i/p. If so, telling the PS3 the TV is 720p might fix this.
