PS3 owners - how quiet is it for movies?

I was going to hop on the Sony Style deal back in August. Ended up cancelling and going for an Xbox.

Now Sony has the $399 PS3 out and it comes with an extra controller. Plus I have that $150 credit that is going to expire in a few days. Considering buying this and having the wife slap a bow on it as a Christmas present.

It would be used about 99% for movies. My xbox while sort of quiet while playing movies, still has an audible fan. Is there any improvement with the PS3? Or does it still have a faint fan running while playing?

You can hear it, but it is quiet (to me at least), the sound in your movies should easily cover it up.

The 65 micron cell revision of the PS3 is probably quieter and cooler, but I do not know if those exist yet.

the ps3 in movie mode is no louder/quieter than the xbox360 in movie mode. neither of them are noticeable to me while watchin a movie.

My PS3 is completely inaudible while watching movies. The 360 in comparison sounds like a small blast furnace.

i can't hear mine either when playing movies. Hey, if you can hear it you could upgrade your home theatre!

I think there differences between 360 models out there. Because my 360 is loud in all states of operation. Even when you just turn the system on and the drive isn't spinning not only are the fans louder than the PS3, the 360 also has an noticeable (to me anyway) "electric hum" that the PS3 doesn't have. Then any time the drive spins up it's like a hover craft is in the room.

The PS3's fan is much quieter than the 360. It does spin faster once the system gets hot, but it tends to make a less objectionable (again, to me) "whoosh" sound rather than the "loud whine" that the 360 produces.

I've only ever used my 360 for movies once (downloaded a movie from the marketplace) and would never use it as my regular movie player due to the noise. MY PS3, OTOH, sees weekly use as a movie player. That's my experience anyway.

Believe it or not, some people watch movies outside of the Action Genre 😉

I've never noticed the sound of either my 360 or PS3 while watching movies. But of course, I used to live next to the interstate, so maybe I'm used to drowning out noise 🙂.

I have a samsung drive, nto sure if that makes a difference.

while playing a game you can hear the fans kick in cause the drive is spinning faster, that is wehre it's louder. when a movie is playing though it's pretty much dead slient.

it's the same for the PS3. the PS3 is far from silent while playing a game but whlie watching movies it seems to be silent as well.

The only time I noticed my PS3 when playing a movie was when it was horizontal on a shelf in my HDTV table (the front and side is open). I have since moved it to the top of the table and in the vertical position and it's a lot quieter.

I have the PS3 in the horizontal position and can definitely hear it during quiet portions of movies. I sit about 13' away from the TV.

Interestingly watching movies causes the fan to kick into high gear after 15-20 minutes but playing video games only rarely causes it.

I can easily ignore the sound but I was surprised at the amount of fan noise it made.

Ah yes, how could I forget the pornography genre.

My PS3 60GB is quiet but not silent by the end of a movie, it's horizontal on an open-shelf rack (no side or back panels).

My brother put his PS3 60GB in an enclosed rack with poor airflow and the fan ramped way up to keep it cool. It was quiet for him before that when he had it on an open shelf.

The 40GB model gives up PS2 back compatibility but uses a lower-power / lower-heat 65nm processor so the fans should stay at a lower speed.

Thanks for the replies guys. Smart move is to just grab the 80 gig with BC, double the space, and Motostorm. But I don't know if the little lady would go any more than the $250 that the 40 gig would cost.

Really though, with the 360 AND the PS3, I don't know how many PS2 games I would even do anyway.

If you like JPRGs like Final Fantasy, there are dozens for the PS2, along with piles of good games in other genres.

But you can always pick up a PS2 Slim someday, they're rumored to be dropping to $99 early next year when the model with an internal power supply (no brick) hits the US.

I have no problems with my PS3 and playing blu-ray movies. I'm used to a 360 anyway where I use an intercooler and that has a constant hum in the background anyway 😛.

apparently, they were confirmed as the $399 PS3 (after being de-confirmed).

sometimes it is louder when upconverting DVDs. (I have 60gb) for about two weeks, I couldn't help but notice that the fan was crazy loud, and now I can't hear it. I think it had to do with firmware updates. Silent at first, update to louder fans, update x2 to quieter fan.

Considering how well it upscales DVDs and how cheap it is for a bluray player, not even to mention all the other stuff it could do...like one day play games....itll be a great HT addition.

My only bitch about the PS3 in the HT environment is the lack of IR.. I hate using the controller as a "remote" and I dont want yet another remote in the room when a universal can do the job just fine. Maybe a USB / IR dongle in the future would address this.

Its a minor complaint really, overall it is a great piece of hardware ( even more so now they are adjusting the prices) and very nice addition to the HT.

USB IR for PS3 + any learning universal remote = win.
