The number 1# reason to own a PS3 has been delayed till next year, which is surely going to piss off a lot of PS3 owners. Metal Gear Solid was going to be the firing shot back to the 360?s HALO and Lost Odyssey combo this fall but it seems instead Sony is gonna have to depend on Uncharted and their other first party games to take up the slack. I certainly hope this years Ratchet and Clank is super kick ass.

According to GameSwank emails were sent out from EBgameS and Gamestop to customers who had pre-orders; notifying them of the new release date info.

Dear Customer,

You have signed up to receive release date changes for:

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product_id=T000316

Old Release Date - 9/1/2007
New Release Date - 3/1/2008

Thank you for visiting EBgames.com!

NOTE: The product release date is the best estimate as to when the product will become available. These dates are subject to change at anytime. EBGames.com is in constant communication with product vendors to provide you with the most accurate release dates possible.

So from this email even March isn?t a sure thing, well good things are worth waiting for I suppose. But how does this affect PS3 sales this coming Fall?

Anybody who spent that much on a console deserves this anyway, just for being a doofus.

That's actually good news. By then PS3 should drop couple of hundred $$ and I'll be able to afford it.

QFT

However, the red ring of death still keeps me from purchasing a 360 (even though I'd love to own one), so I don't think Sony's quite dead yet. At least their system is stable.

It doesn't quite work that way, unfortunately.

For economies of scale to bring down the price of an item, the production capacity must be increased by a significant level. But Sony can't increase the production capacity unless it lures more buyers, and it won't lure buyers unless it has exclusive titles. Likewise, developers won't make exclusive titles unless the installed base is sufficiently high.

It's a self-sustaining downward spiral. That is why, since the PS3s launch, we have seen sales drop, losses mount, and an exodus of exclusive titles from the console.

Fixed your title for you :)
Is MGS4 even a PS3 exclusive, or will it eventually make it to the 360?

Price drop is imminent, it's just a matter of reason and timing. Etiher PS3 sales will remain stagnant and Sony will cut prices to deplete inventory, or as game sales will pickup and Sony will not have to subsidise PS3 anymore.

I have a PS3. Big deal. I'll just wait longer. Games get delayed. Sure, it's a big game. I'll wait, I have other good titles to hold me over.

What does the 360 have anyways? Halo 3? Give me a break. That's the most overrated game I have ever played (it's still good, though).

Regardless of the delay, when big titles do start collecting on PS3 (and they will, it's the Playstation), the sales will probably spank those of the 360.

Sony and the PS3 are FAR from dead, even with a big delay like this.

EDIT: Since when has MGS3 been "the" reason to own a PS3? I'm pretty sure Final Fantasy is more of a seller than MGS.

Funny, or they will take the loss and sell it for a lower price and hope to break even with game sales?

Consoles are a one time buy for most consumers, games are where royalties are made.

That was a rumor that was shot down.

why is it consoles make people so damned hostile towards one another?
I can quote probably the top 4 replies and show how hostile everyone is when it comes to consoles. Never understood why.
Heavenly Sword, Killzone 3 (possibly), Ratchet and Clank, and a few others... are all coming out before the end of the year. It's still the first year of games, and if I remember right, the only game worth owning (for someone who owns a PC as well), was Gears of War at this time for the 360. Halo? Never understood its success. It's a mediocre FPS at best when compared to PC shooters. Story is rather uninspiring, IMO.

regardless of game preference, everyone forgets what numbers the FFXIII games will sell. And since MGS4 will be launched before that, I can pretty easily argue the PS3 is far from suffering any kind of long-term pain. Quite honestly, after the first year is completely over, I will actually stand by my argument that the PS3 will pick up its sales pace and be a strong example of the Playstation name. It will just take a little time.

and, PS3's price will drop regardless of sales. Sales are not required for a price to drop. Price drops also come from the technological development process: as chip die's shrink, circuits get designed more economically, and a slew of other things, production costs come down. The blue laser diode has already come down in manufacturing price, which alone will bring the PS3's production cost down significantly. By the end of the year, it's guaranteed the current price will be profitable for the company, if it's not already now. The 65nm Cell will bring overall costs down too. And after the console is profitable for a short period of time, look for a price cut to help drive sales. Price cuts always help drive sales.

I'm not hostile. I've owned a console from every company currently making consoles. In what way did you think my post was hostile?

The question is when, and by how much?

Remember, the price for the PS3 in Japan is around the $400-mark; almost $200 less than it is here in the US. And the Japanese are even more brand conscious than we are; they have completely shunned the XBOX 360. Even taking all that into account, sales are through the floor in Japan.

A price cut by itself won't change the course.

not hostile per se
but still you felt the need to defend one side

i'm not trying to be a jerk or anything i'm just pointing out that very simply people get defensive and sometimes hostile about things and opinions that relate to themselves.

anyways consoles aren't that bad. the console vs. pc debates and ati vs. nvidia threads are far worse

no FF13, no MGS. Looks like I don't have a reason to buy the PS3 any time soon.

I mostly use mine for blu-ray rentals from Netflix (Casino Royale, Black Hawk Down, etc. and The Fountain on Tuesday). Games are just a bonus, and I have a stack of unplayed PC and PS2 games to keep me busy.

If the 360 was less death-prone I'd own one too, but I'm wating for the 65nm CPU + GPU refresh later this year.
