PS3 or Xbox 360 in 2014...

I'm debating getting a console, pretty much just to play sports games. There's no way I'm paying for a latest gen console (gaming is just not important enough to me to justify the cost), so I was wondering - looking at the purchase now, with hindsight, should I get a PS3 or an Xbox 360?

For sports games, I'd go Xbox 360, though it depends on the sports. I think FIFA does better on PS3 than 360, but the 360 does better for Madden and NBA 2K sales, I imagine. However, if there are other things you want, that's a factor. 360 for shooters, PS2 for third-person action games.

go do some research and see which console has the games you want on it, then go buy it. strangers on the internet can't tell you what you will like.

For me the 360 was what I bought multi platform games on and for me the exclusives were better on PS4 except for racing games. Forza killed Gran Turismo.

This is good advice, but both have the games I'm interested in (mainly NCAA basketball & football, maybe FIFA).

If you want my opinion.. get the 360. I have both consoles, and the PS3 is only used as a blueray player now. I just got an XB1, so they are both going to be useless, but I found the 360 is smoother in menus and stuff. I also felt like the PS3 load times were higher. That is why I went XB1 this generation. I have had every PS console till now. My wife got me on 360.

The 360 is the better console for multi-platform games. Though for sports games, I don't think it matters that much. Any game launched in the last four or five years is basically identical on the two platforms. I'd assume you're buying Madden 2014 and not Madden 06.

The PS3 still has free multiplayer and access to apps. So it's got that going for it. I believe the 360 still requires a XBL Gold subscription just to access Netflix, Hulu, etc.

I'd say just get whatever console you can find the best deal on, and ignore the older "fat" models. Stick with the Xbox 360 S or PS3 Slim.

This is pretty much why I went with the 360. I wanted a good racing game that was not indy car or nascar based and was also classified as an "arcade sim". It basically means that you have to tune your cars to make them better but the tuning is minimal and easy and not necessarily 100% realistic.

Point being. Determine what platform dependent games you would buy on each system and go from there. One system is not necessarily better than the other hardware/feature wise.

If you were looking into a baseball game, the choice would be clear. Try the controllers and then debate if you'd play online enough to warrant Gold or not and if you need a BD player.

Xbox 360 = pay $30-60 per year for online MP
PS3 = free for online MP

Games should be the same on both.

Controllers are vastly different too so you should feel them out first.

Thanks - that's useful. I'm not big into multiplayer, but knowing MS charges for it irritates me.

Np.

Well, to be fair, Sony also charges for it for PS4, but PS3 is still free. If you're not into MP, then it will really just come down to the controller feel and the user interface of the system.

Oh yeah, PS3 also doubles as a blu-ray players (one of the best to this date) so if ever you want to watch a movie or something, you have that option.

You'll probably want to pay for service no matter which system you go with, because they'll both give you a number of free games monthly. The free games programs are slightly different though. With the 360, you keep the games even if your subscription lapses. With the PS3, you lose access to the free games when your subscription lapses.

I'm a causal gamer too and I have both. I feel like the sony exclusives are better. I'm not really sure what xbox has other than halo, fable and gears of War.
