ps3 on a lcd monitor possible?

I currently have a 15" samsung lcd monitor on my pc and am looking to upgrade to a larger monitor, preferably 19". I am also looking to purchase a PS3 sometime in June however, so I was wondering if i can use the ps3 on my new monitor. What are the differences between using a real hdtv versus a lcd monitor for ps3 gaming? What compromises in terms of graphics quality and or refresh rate will i see?

If anyone's wondering, I am looking to purchase the HP w1907 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD
 
I sometimes play PS3 on my 24" LCD but it does 1080p, so I am not sure how HP's 1440 x 900 resolution will handle PS3 resolution wise. A lot of games are 720p though.

EDIT: It's connected via HDMI.
 
I have the 20" version of that monitor series. I would highly recommend getting the 20" b/c of the higher resolution. 1680x1050 will do you much more good.
 
Looks like you'll need an HDMI cable for the PS3, and an HDMI --> DVI converter, since that monitor only has DVI and VGA inputs.

For computing, maybe, but if he's more concerned about PS3 playing then it won't matter, as the great majority of games are 720p, which that 19" handles fine, and any other game will just upscale/downscale to 720P. Of course, the OP didn't specifiy which is more important. I agree with 20" if you can, just for the screen real estate 😉

A bit of a loaded question, as HDTVs and monitors can vary greatly.

For the most part, though, it'll look very nice on your monitor, so I wouldn't worry about degrading quality. Just as long as your monitor's color/brightness/contrast settings are right, the PS3 should look nice. I've gamed on my 24" LCD using component cables and it looks very good, but slightly less sharp than on my 50" DLP using HDMI. I don't mind it, though, as the very slight blurring I get with my monitor's component actually helps the games -- it's a very small amount of smoothing. Looks slightly different than my TV, but not worse/better.

 
About this, if I use my Samsung 225BW (22'') as monitor for my PS3, do I need other wires to have sound (since obviously my monitor doesn't have speakers attached to it)?

I have my PS3 hooked up to a 19" Envision 1440x900 LCD monitor (HDMI -> DVI). I have it set to run 480p, 720p, and 1080p (nothing else). 720p and 1080p both look absolutely fantastic, clearer than most HDTVs I've played on.

However, you might want a monitor that will scale the image properly...mine doesn't, so it's slightly squished (not a big deal, though).
 
OK I can help with this, I have a PS3 and I have it hooked up to my 22" Samsung 225BW, The same screen that my docked laptop and desktop connect to (albeit those do through VGA KVM). The video connection is made through an HDMI to DVI gold plated cable I got a short one for something like $5 shipped and It works great and here is why:

The Samsung 225BW supports HDCP This is VERY IMPORTANT, any monitor that is capable of receiving signal over HDMI / HDMi-DVI is HDCP capable. Lucky for you the HP monitor you are picking does support HDCP however one thing to keep in mind.

However I can't garuantee that your monitor would be able to handle 1080p resolution you might have to go down to 720p which is not good if you can do something about it, in my case all my games except for UTIII are 1080p, so it matters for me.

It's true that my monitor's max resolution is 1680x1050, however I can set my PS3 to 1080p (1920x1080) and the monitor auto scales the video input and it outputs a nice sharp picture as if the monitor natively supports 1920x1080, actually on the screen's menu if you look it says it's a 1920x1080 signal 🙂

One issue you will run into is that the audio output must be rerouted in the system config from HDMI (since most monitors don't support AUDIO through DVI-D) to optical out to optical in or line out into line in. I have a creative sound card connected to my small IBM desktop, so I just set the audio output to optical on the PS3 and run a short optical cable to the sound card's optical in and through that to my Desktop Speakers / Headphones, that small desktop is running 24/7 so I don't have to worry about turning it on everytime I need to frag some suckas on COD 🙂

The only issue that I ever ran into is that since 1920x1080/1080p is not a native resolution, every time the game or the PS3 enters 1920x1080 / 1080p mode a little error message pops on the screen telling me that the res is not optimal....that goes away with single press of a monitor button it's not that annoying but I can deal with that popping once every hour or two whenever I am switching between games.

I keep hearing that there is a way to disable this little annoyance but I didn't figure out how yet....I'll keep looking I guess.
 
Just run the standard PS3 A/V cables to some sort of sound receiver and set the audio to be output via that connection. PS3 is good like that.
 
The picture will be slightly stretched vertically (16:9 to 16:10) unless you get either a 24" that does 1:1 pixel mapping or a monitor that handles the issue with letterboxing. All Gateway LCDs will do the latter; some of the older Dell models did too, but I don't know about the current ones. I believe those are the only under-24" models that qualify.

hit the nail on the head here. my monitor doesn't support HDCP (don't know how i let that one slip by) so it's a no-go for me.
 
So, I'm familiar with how the 360 and HD-DVD's look on my 20" widescreen, but how's the quality of the PS3 and blu-ray at 720p? Also, how's it look on say a 32" or 37" 720p LCD via HDMI? I'm really considering a PS3 mainly for the blu-ray capability and a couple of games (I'm completely sold on HD movies and don't think I'll be buying any more standard-def dvds).

I have the samsung 225BW is the one I have also..it is AMAZING!!

also, most important to me was that it had a source button to switch inputs. I hate having to go through 3 menus to switch from my mac to my 360.
