PS3 Noob Questions

So I put my trust in gaming opinions in your hand last time, and you guys lead me in the right direction with Left 4 Dead. So now I have a couple more questions and I trust you will lead me in the right direction again.

I want to get a ps3. I decided on this cause of the blue ray(cause I need one) and the fact that I have grown up on playstation, so I am much more comfortable with the controller. When it comes to console, I stick with sports games as I am horrible at FPS without my keyboard and mouse, so game selection is not going to be a problem.

1. Do you guys see a price cut in the near future? I only buy new from store with the protection plans, that is just how I am. It has saved me a few times in the past, and the money has been well worth it. However, I don't want to pay $399 now and in a month they drop to $299. I know you guys can't always see the future, but if you have heard anything it would be nice to know.

2. I like the XBOX's ability to talk to the person you are playing online. I am assuming sony would not leave this out of the ps3. However, I cannot find where they include a mic anywhere. What are my options?

3. From what I have heard you have to pay to play online games with XBOX. Is this case for ps3 or can I just hook it up and start playing right away online?

Thanks guys.

1) Everyone seems to be expecting the price of the PS3 to drop sometime around April to June.
2) The PS3 features voice chat but does not come with a mic out of the box. It is a separate purchase.
3) Online play is free.

Sixaxis does not have rumble while the DualShock does.

1: Rumored $100 price drop in the coming months.
2: You need to buy a headset (or get one bundled with certain games). Most people on PSN don't have one, though - particularly in sports games - so you'll be talking to yourself.
3: PSN is free - just get it connected to the internet and you're good to go.

oh yeah, and what is the difference between the sixaxis and the dualshock?

Dualshock is newer. When the PS3 was first launched, they JUST had the sixaxis with no rumble. Now you can get the wireless dualshock with rumble.

As far as the headset goes, you don't need a special one made for the PS3. Any USB or bluetooth headset will work.

Also, some FPS games allow the use of a keyboard and mouse. UT3 comes to mind.

1. That stinks. I really don't want to wait all that long. I guess I might have to bite anyway.
2. That is disappointing to hear not many people use it, maybe I will hold off on this.
3. That is good news.

And no need to worry about sixaxis.

Thanks guys!

Interesting, does that mean any USB keyboard and mouse?

Yea, it's open to any USB device.

Just keep in mind it's not for all games - few, actually. You won't be playing Call of Duty 4 or anything like that with a KB & mouse.

While you don't NEED to get the Official PS3 BT Headset, I will basically go as far to say that... don't buy any one other than the official one. Why? Almost any other one is subject to potential terrible audio quality in gaming.. either on your end or... unknown to you, on the other end (other players receive garbled audio, cannot understand a word you say).

I've experienced both when I had a Motorola BT headset. Done with that. Got the official one, and it's amazing, and super clear. No problems understanding anybody that uses one, and everyone can understand you.

You can try something like the FragFX "controller" for FPS games (works for most pretty well, but not all). It's basically like a controller-mouse hybrid that goes for around $50. It may be worth looking up if you're interested.

I keep seeing Best Buy advertising this thing. Is it any good?

On the subject of a Mic, Sony does sell a Bluetooth earpiece though I'm pretty sure any BT mic will work. Alternatively, you can use the Playstation Eye camera, which has a built in microphone.

Did the old Eye have a mic? (Playstation 2 camera) Thats what I'm using and I don't recall it ever showing up as an audio device.

Thanks a lot guys! I got it last night and it is great. I will look into that FragX when I start getting into the console FPS'. The one thing I was kinda worried about was the controller. Does it ever feel laggy to you guys? Sometimes the response time seems off to me. Is this normal?

Notably, it's not like there's only one headset. There's one that came with Warhawk, and another that came with SOCOM. You want the one that comes with SOCOM.
