PS3 Netflix only outputs at 480i

I just got the PS3 Netflix disk. My tv outputs in 1080p at max... so anyway, I put the disk in and start running it. I check the tv and its at 720p. Which is fine... but once I start playing an HD movie.. it goes to 480i. I play a non-HD movie and its still 480i. Of course, the HD movies look better at 480i still than the non-HD.. but its not HD quality. I am hooking up using component which does 1080p fine. Have tested it with PS3.

Is there anything I am missing as far as getting Netflix to output to at least 720p?

I think the answer is "a better connection"

IIRC the netflix streaming video changes the quality based on how good of a connection it is.

Also not all of their titles are HD

Assuming you are playing a Blu-Ray Disc (which, for whatever reason you keep specifying as "Netflix"), it would be helpful to know what TV model you are using.

Additionally, please quantify your statement that it "does 1080p fine".

Hmm.. Well I am watching their HD movies. So do you mean my internet connection? Its not very fast.. 3 mbps..

This is the information I was requesting. If you are streaming on a 3mb connection over wireless you are likely falling under the medium to low quality setting and are not going to get 1080. I have only successfully achieved 1080 on a hardwired connection and it was fully utilizing 6-8mb of my 25mb connection at any given time to do so.

Your post was very confusing because you stated in the initial sentence that you just got a Netflix disc, so it took a bit of fenagling to understand your post.

Netflix disk. Yes. Netflix sends you a disk (for PS3) to be able to stream movies from Netflix on your PS3. My tv is a LG 42LH30.

By saying that 1080p works.. I have watched movies at 1080p.

Anyway.. So if its my internet connection.. then I have no options. It doesn't look terrible.. just not HD. Its still in 16:9 format though.

And I am going wired.. not wireless.

Interesting. I never knew that, I use PlayOn for my PS3 and my 360 just has Netflix integrated so I never got a disc. I apologize.

Either way, my packeteer reports that Netflix streaming in HD utilizes approximately 6.21gb average. YMMV, but all signs point towards connection speed.

Yeah NFLX streaming is all about how fast your connection is, not your tv. Like Saga, when I stream I use about 6-8mbps constant per the router bandwidth meter.

Dang. It pisses me off too that the house directly in front of me can get cable ( I have to resort with DSL) with speeds of like 15mbps I believe. I hate this pitiful DSL.. Downloading at 300kb on a good day. How much friggin money does it cost to just run a line a couple hundred feet.

Yeah, Netflix HD streaming requires a minimum of a 6 mbps down connection. Maybe 4 or depending on the quality of the line.

Are you on good terms with your neighbour? Perhaps you can subsidize his internet if he lets your run a ethernet cord across the lawn 🙂

When is the PS3 getting away from the disk? I thought they were supposed to change that after the first of the year.
