Also do you know if the new 120GB will have backwards compatibility?

Are there any new changes coming to the PS3 (price drop, system change, chip change) I would consider an XB360 but I don't know when a blu ray add on will come, let alone quality.

Sorry dbrock, I somehow clicked "edit" instead of "quote" and deleted part of your post. I don't know how the hell I managed that. Sorry again.

There is no new 120gb coming. And the new 80gb at $399 will have BC phased out.

None that anyone is aware of.

If all you REALLY want is Blu-Ray and media capabilities and are willing to wait as long as Christmas, I'd at least consider the HTPC route. I haven't priced one out recently, but they can't be much more than $400-500. Not to mention you're on Anandtech and probably have a closet full of existing computer parts like most of us.

I don't even know if the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle will last 'til Christmas. It's just about sold out everywhere around me, which makes me think Sony is starting to phase out the MGS4 bundle. If you want backwards compatibility, I suggest you get one now while you can. If you want to take your chances or don't care around BC, you can wait until Christmas. The price isn't going to come down soon though, if that's what you're waiting for.

If you don't care about BC, the newer 80GB will have the newer motherboard and probably run smoother than the MGS4 bundle.

Smoother how? The new 80GB is exactly the same as the 40GB that you can buy now, except with a bigger hard drive.

Yeah, where did you get that "info" from?

Right... but the current 80GB has an older motherboard than the current 40GB.

Perhaps, I still can't find any proof that the current 80GB doesn't use the same cpu that the 40GB does. Eitherway, it doesn't affect gameplay.

The 40GB might run cooler than the new 80GB, but that's due to the cpu, not the motherboard. My 80GB is quite cool & quiet, I've never heard the fan kick in. That's why I have my doubts that there is a difference in the cpus.

Speed is exactly the same for every variation of PS3 and 360.

For consoles, die shrinks are to cut manufacturing costs not to change performance since that could break existing games which expect fixed hardware specs.

Running cooler and quieter is a nice side effect of the die shrinks.

So the choices are, right now:
$499 - 80 GB MGS4, probably with a 90nm CPU but definitely with PS2 BC.
$399 - 40 GB with 65nm CPU, old sixaxis and no game, NO PS2 BC.

Soon:
$399 - 80 GB with 65nm CPU, dualshock, NO PS2 BC (it's the 40GB with a larger HD)

Xmas:
$399 - 80 / 65 / NO PS2 BC / probably a bundled game or two, some chance of price drop
?? - slight chance of new high-end model with PS2 BC but seems unlikely :( - ??

Unless Sony gets a pure software emulator working we're probably seeing the end of PS2 BC when the 80 GB MGS4 bundle is gone :( .

why do people care so much about PS2 BC?!?! Who wants to wear out their ps3 out playing old games when they can just stack a ps2 slim right next to it or underneath, or wherever. that's just me...

I'm sure by xmas the price will be $349 since I'm sure there will be a price drop to compete with MS.

I remember back in the day, i used to help run the voodoolinks website and did some benchmarking of a voodoo 3 with samsung memory and generic memory, I consistently got 8% faster frame rates with the samsung ram. I don't know why this memory came to mind almost 10 years later but I feel there is some slight frame rate gain with newer improved mobos and shit.

also, is the sixaxis more interesting than the rumble feature? Or would you guys rather have rumble without sixaxis, or do the new dual shocks have both?

A PS2 slim with a pair of memory cards is still $160, +$20 if you want a component cable.

The PS3 with BC uses the HD for unlimited memory cards, and saves clutter and inputs on your TV and receiver.

There's a good chance, especially if MS has the 60GB bundled with game(s) for $299.

For consoles the die-shrunk CPU normally has no design changes (beyond the shrink) and is clocked exactly the same, so it's unlikely.

Dual shock has both motion sensing and rumble. Rumble also works for PS1 / PS2 ganes.

I cared about BC, because my nephew has PS2 games that he brings when I watch him. I got rid of my PS2 when I got the PS3. My PS2 was the original that I got about a week after they first launched.

The Dualshock controllers have both, as it should be.

thanks for the info, my sis has a ps2 so if prices might come down I can wait and get one around Christmas with the 80 hard drive for 399. I am not a huge metal gear fan so I would only be buying the console for the BC and Blu Ray. I can hold on. And no word on the Xbox Blu ray huh?

Just denials from Microsoft. It would probably have been announced by now if it was coming this year.

If it ever appears it will most likely be an external add-on not built-in since Microsoft has promised shareholders the xbox will be profitable and internal would add $50+ to the cost per console.

it's not $180 for all that. You can do the $129 deal and memory cards used and cables are dirt cheap. Or you could just get a used slim for $70 off craigslist/ebay. then you can resell it for near what you paid or even for $50 in a year or two from now most likely if you buy used so essentially the HW is a free rental.

the only feasible part of PS2 BC is the reduced clutter. But clutter doesn't bother me.

I don't want a bunch of freakin' consoles and accessories in my living room. The more I can consolidate, the better. Secondly, the PS3 will upscale PS2 games. That's a nice added bonus.

Upscaling.

My Personal Reasons:

1) I have a huge library of PS1 and PS2 games.

2) PS2 upscaling and graphics smoothing.

3) No need for memory cards.

4) Can easily name each virtual memory card instead of trying to remember which physical memory card is which when coming back to an old game.

5) Wireless Bluetooth controllers FTW!

6) Less clutter and wiring in my entertainment system. This is seriously 1 HDMI and optical vs. 3 sets of component cables and 2 extra optical outputs. I also would have to reconfigure the receiver every time I switched from PS3 to PS2. There's a lot of convenience in just having one box that does it all.

7) This might not apply to all, but I was able to sell most of my PS2 hardware to help cover the cost of purchasing a PS3 with full BC. I bought a 20GB launch console off eBay and haven't looked back.

I actually have a fatty, launch PS2 console I'm keeping in storage, along with some PS1 and PS2 memory cards, and a couple of controllers. I pray my PS3 never breaks, but if it does, at least I have a backup. Also, it's nice to have for downloading gamesaves to and from the Internet via a couple of discs I have that don't work with PS2 emulation on the PS3.

This pretty much summarizes it all up. The PS3 really provides some advantages over the PS2 for playing PS2 games in an HD era. It's annoying as hell when some people (did I say some people? I meant to say "CasioTech") tell us we don't need a feature, and continually ignore us when we give reasons why we do. I've personally done it both ways, and the PS3 is just far superior.
