PS3 Hot shots golf - only outputting 480p?

This is weird. The PS3 is set to 1080i, 480i/p. This TV won't accept 720p. On the back of the game box it says "supported HD output 720p"

So does this mean I can't get any HD golf goodness and since I don't have 720p available the PS3 is only gonna output 480p?

This blows.

Is this a rhetorical question? Look at your TV specs and see what it supports. If it does 720p chances are it does 1080i too. But if neither of those are supported, it's not a HDTV.

No, this is one of the first HDTVs (I'm kind of an addict on audio/video), it's 8 years old. It's a dual scan CRT rear projection. 720p is NOT supported on any input. The only HD it accepts is 1080i.

PS3 is set to ouput 1080i. It seems that since I haven't (and can't) enable 720p output on the PS3 with this display I'm can't get any HD with hot shots golf. Just checking to see if I'm doing anything wrong because I haven't had the PS3 but for a month.

Chances are Hot Shots outputs at 720p and can't upscale to 1080i. Most games these days that are native 720p can upscale to 1080i (I think), but Hot Shots was a fairly early one. I don't know for sure though.

Most games are 720p, if they can't output at that on the PS3 it tries to output them at 1080p. If it can't do that it outputs them out 480p. Best way to get around it, set your PS3 to output at 1080p and let your TV downscale it. That seems to work from everything I have read/been told.

The PS3 acts a bit odd with its scaling for whatever reason. If it can't get what it wants it gives you 480p normally.

Did you even read the OP? 😕

There aren't any games that can't output at 720p but can still output at 1080p.

I have an early 1080i CRT that officially doesn't support 720p, but thankfully it can accept it well enough that most of the time it comes out looking normally.

Yes I read the OP, but he didn't mention what kinda TV he has. I assume any TV that supports 720p supports 1080i was well, so when he said his TV doesn't support 720p, I thought it doesn't 1080i either.

The question's kinda vague anyway, but whatever.

Yeah, I guess I put some assumptions in there. Yet another reason to upgrade my primary home theater. 🙁

Any by "not accepting 720p", I mean it can't even scan it, not possible. A 720p input cannot be done with this TV. I guess I'm SOL with many PS3 games.
