so I plunked down $4.99 for the new Oceania course, the total file size was 100 KB. I was expecting something around 100 MB, at least. Are we paying for content already on the disc? :|

The two new female characters were also 100 KB each, but I figured that character data would probably not need to be so large a file. But now this makes me wonder...

Either the content was already on the disc or they are using existing assets with just a different course layout which probably wouldn't require much space.

Probably already on the disc. But why is that a big deal? If they had left it off the disc and made you download it, would that really have made you happier with your purchase? You should know by now that when you buy software, you're paying for a license. Not the data on the disc, but a license to use it. You bought what they told you you were getting when you bought the game. And you were happy with that, I assume, because you were willing to buy additional content. So I don't see anything to be angry about.

I seriously doubt the course was on the disc. It's either like Queasy said and the game is simply reusing textures and such already on the disc... AND/OR the data it being provided via updates. I think it's a combo.

First off, I believe they've already stated before that the new characters were added in one of the updates. Second, I too bought the new course, but when I started the game it wasn't there. This confused me for a couple of minutes. I search in both the single and local multiplayer menus and didn't see it. Then I got the idea to log into the online portion since I had not done so for while. Sure enough, the game downloaded something like 147 files. As soon as it did that and I restarted the game, the new course appeared. I think this is basically proof that much of the data is being added via updates.

Yeah nothing out of the ordinary here. Except of course people still supporting commercial DLC.

A lot of times a 100kb file is just a start downloading file, where you go to the game section of your xmb, and start the 100kb file.

Then it proceeds to download 200+megs that you can't background download

Why? The download was 100kb. No one's given any evidence that there's an additional download going on, just conjecture.

I gave you evidence above. I bought the course and it did not appear anywhere in my game until I went online and allowed the game to update.

How big should they be? It is a lot of green texture over a map maybe some sand texture. The wind data, geography stuff is already part of the program. Basically everything is there for new course except the arrangement of stuff.

the course is not on the disc.

that update you downloaded on hot shots golf last thursday is when you downloaded the actual course.

the 100kb file you downloaded on the PSN was the "key" if you want to call it that.

the reason they do it this way is because they want every version of HSG that is online to be the same exact version as every other one out there.

Seems like a poor design. Every other developer manages to let DLC users play with non-DLC users without doing that.

but every developer can't make a game as great as hot shots golf!

but seriously, the updates they have done also have other things done to them. like this past update allowed you to play 3h or 6h stroke games, which is something that everyone can use whether they buy the DLC or not. They add in other features like that as well.

So with those updates, they also toss in the course graphics as well. When you turn on the game it has a version # as well.

And also say I bought the new characters but someone else didnt, but I want to play stroke play online with them (where we watch eachother take turns). He needs the graphics and models to be able to have my character render on his PS3.

Same thing goes for the courses. What if I took my saved game file over to a friends house and had a replay saved of the new course. He needs to have the data to be able to render the course on his PS3, regardless of him purchasing the extra course or not.

So actually, it's a great design decision :p

The character model issue makes sense. Being able to view replays on someone else's console is a bit of a stretch. ;)
