I bought a used ps3 off ebay. The seller said it was tested in working condition.

Well it's not, everything works fine except it won't read blu-ray discs. It is an 80gig model...the box it came in is the motorstorm one.

I don't know what to do? I sent a msg to the ebay seller, but I can't say I've ever had good luck with seller disputes. Is there an easy way to tell if the system is under warranty? I can't seem to find that information. Also, the seller or someone took off the upc information from the box. Am I screwed?

Thanks,

-Brian

They prob took the upc stuff off the box for them selves.. or so you purposely can't return it. I dont get why it won't read blu ray.. is it just movies or any video game of any type? Because all the games are dual layer 8gb blu rays I believe.

Well from what I gathered blu-ray uses a different laser than dvd. dvd movies/games work fine.

Did you upgrade the firmware to the latest version? The Motorstorm bundle is -old- so the firmware could be over a year out of date.

Dang. That's how my system died too. Blu-ray death is a common system killer, it has nothing to do with firmware or 'rough handling' of the disks most of the time (fanboy excuses).

I think you need the S/N and model number to check if it's in waranty at Sony Style. Even if you sent it for warranty, you would need a photocopy of the invoice/receipt.

Edit: Want to add that UPC is gone cause you need to send that in for the free Blu-ray offer. Not done to spite you further;). IIRC, you don't need it for RMA; I didn't have mine, just needed receipt.

I believe the UPC was probably removed to get the 5 free Blu-Ray movies that were being promoted last year. I would def dispute this through ebay as the products was not as described. You may be able to get your money back and return this to the seller. This is more or less a launch type system which had a low failure rate but I think Sony charges quite a bit for system repairs that are not under warranty.

Huh? I had to upgrade my firmware to watch Sunshine (the first half of which was pretty good). It's just something to try before going through the hassle of disputing or a Sony RMA, not an excuse.

If that doesn't help, and if the disc you're tying isn't visibly damaged, then the drive isn't reading properly and it's a hardware problem.

rocadelpunk - you definitely want to get the seller or PayPal to take care of this, Sony will charge you $149 for an out of warranty repair, even worse than MS' $99 for a DVD-ROM replacement.

From what I read you have to have original receipt for RMA purposes or its $149. I would try a blu ray cleaner maybe you will luck up and it will smack some dust particles off that might be causing your issue. I was gonna buy a opened but never used PS3 40gb for $275 until I read Sony requires proof of purchase for warranty. Just killed the deal for me because I keep reading alot of stories about the blu ray drive crapping out.

When you say games do you mean ps2 games? All ps3 games i have seen are Blu-ray disc so to me they would run off the same laser. Not sure what i could be. Sucks though. Hope you find a solution!
