My room mate had a ps3 in our room and he did all sorts of cool stuff with it..now that I own one I would liek to do some of the things he did.

1. He often got demos of games on his ps3 that he said he downloaded online. First of all, was this illegal? or was it free ( don't want to get in trouble). Secondly, if this is legal what sites offer these downloads. I would assume I just out it on my flash drive and put into my ps3.

2. He streamed music from his computer to his ps3. I am purchasing some digital surround sound speakers soon and hooking them up to my console, so this would be huge for me.

3. I don't know if it was windows xp or a version of *nix but he def. had some sort of OS running and a usb keyboard hooked up to it and was going on the internet and doing all sorts of things.

If anybody knows how to do these things or anything else that is useful besides playing games and movies let me know.
Thanks

1. Yes, it is completely legal. It is called the PSN store. You can download demos, full games, extras, whatever. Demos are free, 99% of the games you'll have to pay for. You just tie a credit card to your account and when you buy something online, it bills your credit card. Simple.

2. You launch WPM11 from your Windows XP/Vista machine and give the PS3 access to its content and the PS3 will find it and stream music from the PC. Easy. You can also stream videos if you'd like, but it could be a little trick depending on the codec you are trying to stream.

3. You don't need to install another OS to use a keyboard. You can get a bluetooth keyboard and it will work with the PS3. You can surf the net (the PS3 has a built in browser) and play games with it. If you want, you can also install Linux on your PS3 if you want. You don't have to to surf the net, but you can.

2. Only WMP11 works with the ps3? I believe I have wmp10. I might need to upgrade. How does the PS3 just "find" that wmp is open on my computer. It is a desktop and in no fashion connected to the console by any means. No wireless or anything.

Also.. how often will I need to update my console. I read a whole thing about naming certain things on the ps3 like.. anything going in music label it MUSIC and any updates.. UPDATES, etc.

Thanks

Look into TVersity...nice little program which allows you to stream music and video through your network to the PS3. It also transcodes (most) video on the fly, so you won't need to worry about using PS3-specific codecs.

OK I will look into it. If I have any quesitions( which is bound to happen) I will post back in this thread.

PS. Will I need to be under MUSIC in my ps3? or will the music just start to play? Well.. I guess I will find out..please post back here tho incase I can't get it to work.

I dl'ed the TVersity program...I open it.. then what? I got into my ps3 and clicked "search for media servers" and it says no connection can be established. Do I need my ps3 hooked up to the internet to be streaming the music?

You need to open it, and add files/directories to share, then start sharing. Why not ask your friend?

Haha, my friend is hard to get a hold of in the summer..

My setting for my ps3 is on wireless...But I have no wireless internet router in my house. This means I need to use an ethernet cord correct? Sorry if my questions are dumb.

Btw when I go to it and I add my folder where all my music is stored, I get this message saying "unable to connect to server, make sure it is running" .
