PS3 Headset

I'm looking to get a PS3 headset that I can listen to the actual PS3 game audio through; this will help for when the wife is sleeping and I'm wanting to play. Any recommendations? Wireless would be preferred obviously but I could do wired.

I think any bluetooth headset will work, but I'm not sure. There are some expensive "gaming" headsets from companies like AGE (that have gone out of business I believe).

I think most are mic oriented, but a blutooth headphones should be picked up by the PS3 and work.

Will those output the actual game audio though, or just online chat?

The official PS3 wireless headset is pretty good. I have the original one and it's still working great and sounds good (it looks super ugly though).

There's been a new revision of it since I bought the original one, and I'm sure it's just as good as the original. I believe it's priced around $80.

Edit: I was wrong, the newer one is over $100

In looking at that one or a $300+ one on EBay that is Japan only. Wireless , 7.1, 12-20 hrbattery life, and the best part, the base station has HDMI passthrough and optical inputs. Reviews compare favorably with audiophile gear. The model # escapes me at the moment.

The 7.1 and HDMI passthrough are the main features I've been looking for. Will work with anything with full features, not just PS3.

I use the Turtle Beach P11 wired. Works just as you would like, one volume control for in game audio, a second for voice chat, and an on/off switch for the mic. Long cord that connects into the USB and audio ports.

I have the official pulse version. It's great - highly recommended. Does virtual 7.1, but only when used with the playstation.

The playstation official ones run wireless off a usb dongle. The usb must provide power to the dongle to do wireless. But it does come with a 3.5 mm jack and cable for times when that isn't available.

Not sure what HDMI passthrough is so I can't comment on that.

I have the Tritton 720 which is great, does surround sound but definitely spring for a wireless one. Long wires suck.

Plug HDMI into it, it plays the 7.1 bit stream, and forwards the HDMI out for a display.

Using 7.1 (only provided via HDMI combined with video) with separate audio and video devices can be a pain.

It really depends on your room setup. Wired headsets or high end headphones with a clip on mic can have superior sound quality, but if you have kids and pets running around the living room it can create a hazard to have wires running along. Many wireless headsets sound good but 2.4Ghz can receive interference and Bluetooth uses some compression which results in ever so slight quality degradation. Most people will never know.

If you don't mind the branding on it, this headset is awesome. My wife bought it for me for Christmas last year. Now it is down to $99 which is a steal. I had the original sony wireless headset with the dongle and it sucked..kept getting wifi interference. This one runs off the 5ghz band and has been flawless. I have hooked between my TV and surround sound receiver so that I can also watch TV in dolby digital late at night without waking everyone. Midnight Game of Thrones or Homeland or something on DVR that my wife could care less about sound amazing. In game audio is via bluetooth connection and I haven't had anyone complain online that they can't hear me or that it is bad. As for the rechargeable, I can play a few nights a week then I just plug them in for a charge off the USB port of my TV which seems to be working fine for the past several months doing it this way. Also, they are way more comfortable IMO then the sony pulse.
