PS3 HDD question

Also, it's 5400 RPM. I know the 20GB I have right now has 2MB cache, but the 60GB + models have more cache. I don't know whether it would be bad to have a large HDD (160GB) with only 2MB of cache.

Cool. I'll be installing my new 350GB w/ 8MB cache tonight 🙂 It will be a nice upgrade from the old 20GB I have in there now, especially considering half of that was going to linux.....

not too bad. $130. Chances are I'll never fill it, but that's ok, I'd rather have too much space than too little.

What's the process for upgrading a harddrive? Does it invalidate any warranties or anything like that? I'm assuming you don't need any mod chips or anything (AFAIK, none exist) and it still works like a normal PS3 right?

I've only got a 40GB and while im not close to filling it yet, i don't want to have to constantly shift game installs around as my collection grows.

It is all in the manual.

Yup. It's really easy. Just pop off the cover on the side, unscrew the carriage, swap out the HD, put it back in.

I've already managed to use 70GB of my new HD, hahah. I installed all my games that require it (ninja gaiden, DMC 4, unreal tournament, GT5) and then went on a massive download spree. Awesome.

This is awesome, I am so going to do this.

Do you guys recommend any particular drive (make, model, speed, etc.)?

It was a typo up there, it's 320GB not 350. It's quieter than the drive that was in there from the factory. I considered going 7200RPM, but I read a few things online from people who tried it and everything said there was little to no difference.

Nice, thanks. My local store is having a big Canada Day sale, so I should be able to pick up that, or something very similar, for cheap.

It may be official. The instructions may be in the manual. But Sony literally glues some of those screws on. It can be extremely difficult to unscrew if you're unlucky. Worse, the screws are small and they lose their grip after a while.

I still can't solve that one GPU problem (random graphical messups/artifacts in MGS4 during cutscenes). Other than that, I have one heck of a beast console.

I got this one from Newegg for $129.99 - $30 MIR. Dunno if that will help any Canadians, but it's good for people in the US...

400 gig ps3 is nice 😛

I don't understand.. why wouldn't you just put the drive inside the ps3? is it hot swappable? Does the ps3 dashboard play nicely with that?

At the time I did it, I couldn't find a 400+ gig internal hdd. Also, regular HDD's are cheaper. I also got a pretty good deal at the time for that 400 gig.

When the harddrive is not on (separate power supply), the dash tells me there is no hdd. I haven't swapped out hdd's yet.

hrm, sorry for the dumb question, but what do you gain from upgrading the HD capacity?

More hard drive space... if you knew it was a dumb question, why did you ask it?

I guess there could theoretically be a speed difference if you upgraded the cache, since some games use the HDD. But more size = more size, that's it

Well, although it was dumb question I still wanted to find out ...

I guess what I meant was why the added HD space? All the media can be streamed through the network right, and games don't take that much space?
