PS3 HDD compatibility list

My PS3 HDD is getting close to capacity (120GB). I'd like to install a larger one. Does anyone know if there is a compatibility list available? The useless dingbat at Sony told me that it can't be done. I'm pretty sure the myriad videos on YouTube would prove otherwise.

There is a height limit as well for the drives. Some of the newer 4 or 5 platter drives raised the overall height of the 2.5" disk from 9.5mm to 12.5mm. I would make sure you get a 9.5mm drive since the 12.5mm drives were not out when the PS3 was originally designed and they may not fit.

The PS3 really doesn't care what kind of SATA hard drive you put in it, as long as it's no bigger than 1TB. IIRC, that's the maximum the file system can read.

Like Fallen Kell said, I'd stick with the 9.5mm hight drives, which should include most 1TB ones these days. There's not much room in the bays for the fatter ones.

The PS3 will take any SATA SSDs. I don't recall there being any compatibility issues with those. PS4 is a different story though. Not worth it IMO. The larger capacity ones cost more than a new console anyway.

I am not aware of any current 2.5" SATA HDDs that are over 9.5mm and under 1TB unless they are a fairly old design, so really this should be a nonissue today.
