PS3+HD-DVD player + Onkyo 605..is it possible?

After Toshiba announced it would no longer support HD formats, I got pissed and got my mitts on the first new 60gb PS3 I could find. I pulled out the HD player, the PS3 went in its place & I have been enjoying it ever since.

The other day the wife wanted to watch a movie or 2 that we had in HD and asked if I could connect the HD player up.
I didn't think it would be an issue since the 605 has 2 HDMI inputs. The PS3 is on HDMI input 1, the HD-player is on HDMI 2 and the cable converter comes in on composite.

Onkyo states that the DVD player (blu-ray or otherwise) must come in on HDMI 1.
It says nothing about using a 2nd player on HDMI 2.
I tried to get the 2nd hdmi to register as a video source on the receiver but nothing would work.
I don't know if this is possible or not. If it is, I am missing something.

And before anyone says "just unplug and switch the cables!", I am not going to be doing that. It's a royal pain in the ass to pull the receiver out, mess with all of the cables and cramming it back in.

Short of buying a HDMI switch.....how do I get this working?

That should work fine. How are you outputting from the receiver to your TV? I've never heard of an HDMI input that had to be used just for a DVD player or just for something else. The two inputs should be identical.

The connection from the TV to receiver is HDMI. The receiver has 2 HDMI inputs and one output.

Maybe the 2nd one doesn't support audio over HDMI?

Well, right now there is neither a video or audio signal. I had a movie playing in the HD player to check that.
I can't set the receiver to have both HDMI 1&2 as a DVD source.
The PS3 is set in HDMI 1 as the DVD source. I may try putting the PS3 in HDMI 2 as a game source and plugging in the HD player in HDMI 1 for the DVD source. I didn't think it would be this aggravating.

I have the 605 and it will work. You'll have to map the HDMI port to another button, like the AUX, or VCR/DVR, since you're HDMI 1 is already mapped to the DVD button. I currently have my Media Center and PS3 hooked up through HDMI. PS3 hook up to HDMI1 mapped to DVD. MediaCenter hooked up to HDMI2 mapped VCR/DVR. Both are able to get audio and video through the hdmi.

There is no difference between HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 on the Onkyo. Most of the things saying what item must come in what port in a manual are suggestions to reduce confusion for people when they wire something a second time and forget how they did it the first time. Also on the Onkyo each port is mappable to any input.

On my 705 I have HDMI 1 mapped to Cable/TV which I renamed HD-DVR and HDMI 2 mapped to some random input which I renamed to DVD (since DVD was where my Multi-Channel HTPC was going in at). Its just a matter of how deep in the menu's you want to be.

Ok problem solved.

I'm almost embrassed to say what was wrong, but...somehow the HDMI cable managed to become disconnected on the HD player. 😱

I didn't even think about looking until I re-read what I said about the receiver not having a signal.
Damnit, I hate when I do crap like that.
