As reported by AT neighbor, Daily Tech, the PS3 HDD can be easily swapped out. THe PS3 uses standard 2.5" SATA units. More info here.

Is there any other difference between the PS3 that has a 20GB and a 60GB one?

I wonder if this will give Microsoft the kick in the pants to allow external USB hard drives to work with the 360 (game saves, demos, trailers, XBL Video, etc). Highly doubtful though.

I think I'd just get the 20gb one and upgrade my HD in the future. I don't know if the 20gb PS3 will be easier to find or not.

Hmmm. still, a 2.5" hard drive is pretty pricy and so far it doesn't seem like a good idea to use a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter. :D
I'm sure people will find a way to get it to use 3.5" hard drives with some cable though.
This is new news to me. :)

80%/20% 60GB/20GB

That might fly for the launch when it's in high demand, but once they're more readily available I think the customer demand will be different.

Although with talk of games installing several GB of data on the hard drive for faster access, that 60 GB hard drive might come in handy...

From my understanding HD video really won't be that much of a concern. From what I've read HD movies will take up a considerable amount of space, but you can't keep it. All HD movies will be rented and will expire within 24hr (I believe that is the time limit). So even if it does take up quite a bit of space, you'll end up deleting it because it will no longer play. Now that is just my understanding, someone correct me if I'm wrong. Sony may allow you to install even a 160GB drive, but with games installing 5GB worth of data each, that space is going to shrink up FAST. The 360 80GB hard drive may end up giving more usable space for content downloads than a 160GB drive for the PS3. But it would be nice if MS let you install any HDD you'd like, just like the PS3.

Those 5GB game installs are optional for the PS3. So I don't quite understand your argument in the last sentence.

It is "optional" but it is optional for a reason. The Blu-Ray drive is extremely slow, that is why Sony gave the "option" to install to the hard drive. Yes, if you like long load times, then you'll definitely save HDD space. But I think most people will install the game to the HDD after they see the difference it makes in load times.

LOL... nice!

You can now get external HDD enclosures with SATA plugs on the back of em, just run a SATA cable from inside the PS3 to the back of one of an enclosure with a large 3.5" drive in it, and you're all set :)

It doesn't matter one way or the other, Sony still wins.

1) Sony actually gives users the OPTION to upgrade their hard drive w/o voiding your warranty or having to use proprietary equipment. A 160GB 2.5" SATA will set you back around $160.

2) If MS does offer the 80GB drive, you're looking at paying AT LEAST $199

Wow....I thought there was going to be something special about these drives despite the regular connection..

if this is the case Sony gets kudos for being smart in this instance ! When I get a ps3 in like 3 years from now i'm going to have to think carefully about which one to get if the drive is that simply upgraded!@
