PS3 got hit by surge. HDMI Port dead. now what?

So my beloved PS3 (fat) got hit by a big surge.

It does power up but the HDMI outputs nothing.

I have been using the PS3 via HDMI since day 1 (my receiver decodes HDMI audio).

I just found out about the multi-AV port. Honestly, I never even bothered about it when I bought the PS3. The special cable is probably still in the original box in the attic.

If I use that multi-AV cable ... do I have to use optical for audio? Will the optical push 7.1 PCM to my receiver?

Plan B - Is there a cheap way to replace that HDMI port? Thanks !!

Have you tried to reset the video output?

Turn on the TV.

Turn off the PS3.

Hold down the power button on the PS3 (not the controller) until 2 beeps. release

The PS3 should power up and now ask if you want to use HMDI.

Other than that you might have to ship it back to Sony.

You can do 5.1 via optical, but not 7.1 (and no HD audio formats). Toslink doesn't have the bandwidth for 7.1 PCM. So, you either settle for 5.1 or you'll need to have a working HDMI port.

Thanks guys. I will probably stick to optical and multi-AV. Replacing the HdMI calls for replacing the entire motherboard. (read: more expensive than a whole PS3).

Sony has a flat-rate repair service for virtually everything they sell, and on the PS3 I want to think it is around $150, but don't quote me on that. Not exactly cheap, but cheaper than a new unit. It is basically a no questions asked repair service, though I would imagine a few basic restrictions would apply. Like you can't just send them a box of PS3 parts and expect a new unit, no obvious liquid damage, that sort of thing. A power surge would certainly qualify, though you will likely get a slim model back if you send yours in, which would really only matter if you had one of the originals with the PS2 EmotionEngine CPU in it.
