Link to story.

Like I said, this could be crap made up by sony haters. But if it's true I don't think the ps3 will sell well this christmas.

And I thought paintball was an expensive hobby!

i remember snes having games for 80 bucks a piece. i wanted return of the jedi for my birthday and didnt get it because it was so expensive. i didnt even look at the price until i told my dad its what i wanted and he started to laugh :/

this price speculation has been around for a while, and it seems pretty clear that the PS3 games will be atleast as much as 360 games ($60) but it seems like they are going to cost more.

if you have been following the whole ps3/xbox360 scene this news has been around for a long time. but yes, there still has been no official word by sony in regards to this issue.

But, it does make sense given the cost of Blu-Ray discs.
Not really. Blu-ray movies are going to cost $25-40. Even then, most of that cost is for the content, not the disc.

Think this out. So you're saving Movies will cost $5-20 more than movies right now. That's a 25%-100% increase in cost over DVD movies. Xbox 360 games now cost $59.99. Based off that, one could argue that a $70-80 is more than possible or likely.

So yes, really.

I heard games are going to cost $100 each. I'm not sure if that's true or not since I just made it up, but feel free to tell your friends. :|

Whhaaa? I only ever remember paying $60 each, and that was through the Sears catalog.

Regardless of how much the new games cost (if they cost $80, I'll be surprised), Sony is screwing themselves by trying to prevent people from selling their old games and buying used games. I buy all of my games used at GameStop. I get them a little (or a lot) later than everyone else, but 1. I don't care, they're fun to me, and 2. I have a decent collection of games for the prices of two PS3 games.

That is a pretty flimsy rationale. Manufacturing costs are only a fraction of the final retail price. You aren't paying for the cost to press a plastic disc. You're paying for the content on that disc. A 100% increase in manufacturing costs does not always correlate to a 100% increase at retail.

PS3 games could very well cost $80. I do not doubt that it's possible. However, blaming the price increase soley on Blu-ray discs is specious at best.

Wii is going to eat Sony's lunch . . .

Wi is going to come out Nov 6 says the rumor network, a week and a half before Sony. If true, Sony's in a deeeeep hole.

It's kind of funny now, how when the XBOX 360 was released people thought that Microsoft had made a mistake by not going with a HD disc of some sort, either HDDVD or BluRay. But now, seeing this from Sony (possibly), maybe Microsoft made the right choice. Sometimes technology is just too new to put into something like a game console, better to let it mature and the price drop, and put it in the next version in a few years once it catches on. What happens if BluRay dies off, like UMD has? Sony will be left holding a dead technology that only they use, and is too expensive in the long run to be worthwhile.

Either way, I haven't bought any Sony product since a PS, and even that was used off ebay. I don't plan on buying a PS3, or even a PS2 at this point, although I will seriously consider a Wii.

Consoles were the first CD players many people owned.

I think consoles are absolutely the right place to put new tech.

Depends. Even though consoles were the first CD players for some people, the technology had been around for a while already. Same thing with DVD players. Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are just now being introduced at practically the same time as the PS3.

I don't think it's "pretty flimsy rationale". Show me where I EVER mentioned Manufacturing cost as the only attributing factor in the cost of new games. You made up words to defend an argument on something I never said? What sort of logic is that.

There are several things that attribute to the higher cost of movies/games. Manufacturing cost is one (regardless if you believe it or not), development time for the new PS3 (which is supposed to be a real pain in the butt) and Supply/Demand.

About Manufacturing - Blu-Ray is NOT the easiest manufacturing method. Phillips (or was it Panasonic?) just announced they will not meet the deadline for Blu-Ray because of manufacturing problems. Blu-Ray isn't like HD-DVD, it's a whole new process with new duplication machines and materials. Production shops are having to outfit their places with an entire new system. If you don't think that is going to lead to the rise in cost for new product manufacturing....

Just like DVD was expensive to produce at first, Blu-Ray is that much more. Initial supplies will be expensive and that cost is passed on to the end user.

I'm not sure they will be $80, but I definitely think they will be $69.99 with a possibility for $80 for some games. Time will tell.
